Lang Lang and the Goldberg Variations. Always the same, always different. The essence of Bach’s Goldberg Variations turns on this fundamental tension: a perpetual bass line connecting the initial aria melody with 30 astonishingly inventive variations. While surveying the fascinating architecture of this work, my pre-concert lecture will also consider how the Goldberg Variations played a crucial role in popularizing Bach during the twentieth century.
