DESCRIPTION:What a terrific concert! The London-based Philharmonia Orchestra\, with principal conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali\, will be joined by pianist Víkingur Ólafsson\, known for his extraordinary technical precision and brainy artistry. Sign me up! In fact\, I’ll have the pleasure of introducing the program: Ravel’s celebrated Piano Concerto in G major\, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47 (with all its attending historical lore)\, and Gabriela Ortiz‘s new orchestral work\, Si el oxígeno fuera verde (If oxygen were green)\, dedicated to the memory of her friend and fellow Mexican musician\, Jorge Verdín. \nIn fact\, dedications will be an anchoring theme for my talk\, which will also explore the historical contexts and styles of these three very different\, but compelling works.

DESCRIPTION:The Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents piano phenom\, Alexander Malofeev\, who won first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians when he was just 13 years old in 2014. Der Standard declared his debut at the Musikverein as “a world piano revolution\,” and indeed Malofeev already has already achieved an impressive professional career which shows no sign of slowing down. \nI’m very excited to be giving the preconcert lecture for Malofeev’s fascinating program. Variation and rearrangement lie at the heart of selections by Handel\, Muffat\, Purcell\, Bach\, Weinberg\, and Liszt’s arrangement for piano of Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture. It will be a delightful musical excursion! \nThe lecture is at 7pm\, one hour before the concert at 8pm.

Mezzo soprano Isabel Leonard and classical guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas will present a magical recital of Spanish language song and solo guitar gems\, including arias from Carmen and The Marriage of Figaro\, the Argentine favorite “Alfonsina y el Mar\,” and Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tárrega. \nIn addition to providing insights about the works themselves\, my talk will explore the special flexibility of the guitar as a solo and accompanimental instrument.
