SUMMARY:Opera League of Los Angeles: Seminar on Mozart's "Così fan tutte"
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of the upcoming Los Angeles production of Mozart’s comic opera Così fan tutte\, my presentation for the marvelous Opera League of Los Angeles will interrogate the gender-determinist premise of the work’s title—women are like that—in the context of Enlightenment ideas of rationalist demonstration. Moreover\, I’ll explore how contemporary productions and audiences grapple with the challenges of this “school for lovers” and what different kinds of lessons might be drawn from the opera. \nAbout the Opera League of Los Angeles\nFounded in 1981\, the nonprofit Opera League of Los Angeles is the primary volunteer support organization\, and co-founder\, of LA Opera\, the resident opera company for the City of Los Angeles that was established in 1986. \nThe Opera League produces an array of educational programs including seminars\, gatherings\, musicales\, master classes\, and much more\, all with the common aim of expanding the appreciation of opera by bringing people together to celebrate this timeless art form.

SUMMARY:Pre-performance Lecture: LA Opera’s “La Traviata”
DESCRIPTION:I will be giving the pre-performance lecture on one of the most popular opera in the canonic repertoire\, Verdi’s La traviata! This new production by Shawna Lucey (General Director and CEO of Opera San Jose ) drew enthusiastic reviews with audiences and critics in San Francisco and is now ready to charm opera lovers in Los Angeles. Rachel Willis-Sørensen stars as Violetta\, with tenor Liparit Avetisyan as her beloved Alfredo and Kihun Yoon as Father Germont. \nI will explore the ideas behind Lucey’s “feminist take” on Traviata\, with a look at the woman—Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis— who inspired the character of Violetta by way of Alexander Dumas fils’ novella and play\, The Lady of the Camellias.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Pelléas et Mélisande
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Opera is staging Debussy’s only complete opera\, Pélleas et Mélisande. A masterful response to the stylistic gauntlet thrown down by Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde\, Debussy’s Pélleas sets to music the Symbolist play of Maurice Maeterlinck—another take on the “star-crossed-lovers” theme. I’ll be looking specifically at the many influences that helped to shape Debussy’s unique\, modernist musical language from the music of the Wagner to the avant-garde (and anti-German) model of Erik Satie\, from the colorful harmonies and orchestrations of the Russian Five to the unfamiliar sounds from Asia that he heard at the 1889 Paris Exposition. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pre-performance Lectures: LA Opera's "Tosca" (all performances)
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Opera presents Puccini’s immortal Tosca—a suspenseful political drama and love story centered on the fictional diva and force of nature\, Floria Tosca. Dr. Brown-Montesano will delve into some of the essential influences on Puccini’s creative thinking for this particular opera\, from the evocative backdrop of Rome during the Napoleonic Wars to the real-life aesthetic challenges of Italian verismo and Wagnerian concepts of music-drama. \nFrom the Los Angeles Opera: The cast for this production is led by four of the greatest artists of their generations. Soprano—and UCLA alum—Angel Blue takes on the iconic role of Puccini’s glamorous but tough-as-nails heroine\, with tenors Michael Fabiano and Gregory Kunde sharing the role of Mario Cavaradossi\, the rebel who becomes the target of the most dangerous man in Rome. Bass-baritone Ryan McKinny is the evil Scarpia\, who likes nothing more than seeing his victims suffer. The heart-pounding production is staged by the legendary director John Caird and led by the fast-rising young conductor Louis Lohraseb in his mainstage company debut. \nDr. Brown-Montesano will be speaking before all performances of Tosca: \n\nSaturday\, Nov 19\, 2022. Lecture @ 6:30pm\, curtain @ 7:30pm.\nSunday\, Nov 27\, 2022. Lecture @ 1pm\, curtain @ 2pm.\nThursday\, Dec 1\, 2022. Lecture @ 6:30pm\, curtain at 7:30pm.\nSunday\, Dec 4\, 2022. SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Tosca
DESCRIPTION:Tosca: Puccini’s ultimate prima donna! This Opera for Educators session is open to the public\, not just educators! Dr. Brown-Montesano will delve into the aesthetics of Italian “verismo” (“realism”) and consider opera’s central conflict between celebrated diva Floria Tosca and the sadistic Baron Scarpia. (Tickets $20) \nAbout the Opera: Floria Tosca\, the famous opera singer\, seems to have it all. Audiences cherish her artistry—and adore hearing about her tempestuous offstage romances. But as storms of repression and rebellion rage throughout Italy\, the diva is forced to play a real-life role she never imagined. \nTorn between devotion to her lover and the machinations of a treacherous sociopath who will do anything in his power to break her down\, she’s trapped in an utterly impossible predicament\, with fatal consequences for them all. But this prima donna isn’t going down without a fight. \nThe cast is led by four of the greatest artists of their generations. Soprano Angel Blue takes on the iconic role of Puccini’s glamorous but tough-as-nails heroine\, with tenors Michael Fabiano and Gregory Kunde sharing the role of Mario Cavaradossi\, the rebel who becomes the target of the most dangerous man in Rome. Bass-baritone Ryan McKinny is the evil Scarpia\, who likes nothing more than seeing his victims suffer. In her company debut\, trailblazingUkrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv leads a heart-pounding production staged by the legendary director John Caird.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Rhiannon Gidden's Omar
DESCRIPTION:Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels bring their new opera—Omar—to Los Angeles. This presentation is open to the public\, not just educators! Co-presentation with Dr. Tiffany Kuo on the sounds of contemporary opera and the musical styles of Omar’s co-composers. (Tickets $20.) \nAbout Omar: In 1807\, a 37-year-old scholar living in West Africa was captured and forced aboard a ship bound for Charleston\, South Carolina. Omar Ibn Said’s life and Muslim faith are remembered and retold in this inspirational West Coast premiere inspired by his remarkable 1831 autobiography (the only known surviving American slavery narrative written in Arabic). \nSet in the shifting darkness of memory and imagination\, Omar follows his compelling journey from a peaceful life in his homeland to enslavement in a violent\, foreign world. Lost in the wilderness of his thoughts and his stolen life\, he’s haunted by memories of his family and the people he encounters along the way. Through it all\, he somehow remains true to himself and his faith\, against all odds. The luminous score incorporates distinctive West African traditions with traditional opera instrumentation. \nLearn more about the creative process of Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels in this New York Times article.

SUMMARY:LA Opera for Educators / Women of Don Giovanni
DESCRIPTION:Don Giovanni. This infamous rake poses interesting challenges for audiences in the #MeToo era. And certainly K-12 educators are conscious of those issues as they introduce this Mozart classic to 21st century students. \nBased partially on my book (Understanding the Women of Mozart’s Operas) I will be talking about the opera’s musical and dramatic structure\, as well as directorial choices and reception history of Mozart’s Don. As educators\, together we’ll review possible critical lenses applied to Don Giovanni (and Mozart) (and opera producers) in considering this opera’s female characters.

SUMMARY:Marriage of Figaro / Opera for Educators
DESCRIPTION:I particularly enjoy these events because I have the honor of teaching teachers! The LA Opera designed the Opera for Educators workshop series as a professional development opportunity for local educators (K-12). Through multiple sessions and discussions\, this particular workshop does a 360-degree review of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. I will be focusing specifically on the female characters in my talk Teaching Rhetoric through Musical Style: the “Sound” of Class\, Gender\, and Emotion in Mozart’s Figaro.
