SUMMARY:Upbeat Live: Dudamel Leads World Premiere of Ortiz's "Glitter Revolution"/ California Festival (Nov 19)
DESCRIPTION:Led by Gustavo Dudamel\, this concert is part of the statewide California Festival\, a statewide music showcase spotlighting the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years. \nThe program spotlights works by two Latin composers\, opening with Astor Piazzola’s tango-inflected The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires\, arranged orchestra and solo violin (Leticia Moreno). But the main event is a new ballet score by the composer Gabriela Ortiz\, co-curator of the Pan-American Music Initiative with Dudamel and the Phil. Like many of Ortiz’s works\, the ballet Revolución diamantina (“Glitter Revolution”) connects to critical real-world events\, in this case the feminine protest movement that erupted in Mexico in 2019 following the rape of a girl by police officers. \nAn LA-Phil commission\, Revolución diamantina receives its world premiere (concert version) with this 4-concert run. I will have the honor of speaking with Gabriela Ortiz about her first ballet score during the Upbeat Live preconcert conversation and lecture.

SUMMARY:UpBeat Live /The Nutcracker with Dudamel
DESCRIPTION:Gustavo Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a magical program combining Tchaikovsky’s beloved holiday score with selections from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s swinging Nutcracker Suite\, including “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Peanut Brittle Brigade.” The LA Phil will present the Ellington/Strayhorn Nutcracker in an arrangement for classical orchestra by jazz musician and composer Jeff Tyzik. \nDr. Brown-Montesano’s pre-concert lecture focuses on the extraordinary skills in orchestration that Tchaikovsky\, Ellington\, and Strayhorn brought to their scores\, giving their “bands” music that delighted audiences and placed the musicians in the spotlight. \nFrom the LA Phil: The Christmas Eve setting of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker has helped it to become one of America’s most beloved Christmas traditions (we can thank the San Francisco Ballet of the 1940s)\, even though the composer had nothing of the sort in mind. By 1960\, the potential appeal of updating Tchaikovsky’s score was obvious enough to a savvy musician like Duke Ellington. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:UpBeat Live / Fidelio with Deaf West Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Fidelio—Beethoven’s only opera—continues to lend itself to dramatic innovation. Join me for Upbeat Live\, where we review Fidelio’s history and prepare this new semi-staged collaboration between the LA Phil’s and Deaf West Theatre. Hearing vocalists sing while Deaf actors use the gestural poetry of sign language to explore communication—both primal and sublime—at the heart of all artistic expression.

SUMMARY:LA Phil / Salonen\, Strauss + 2 Premieres
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano for UpBeat Live to explore this Esa-Pekka Salonen-led program featuring two exciting premieres. \nSalonen’s own Fog (a tribute to Frank Gehry) takes as inspiration the Bach E major Prelude from Partita in E (BWV 1006)\, which was the first piece of music Salonen and Gehry heard in the Walt Disney Concert Hall while it was still under construction. Much of the of the harmony is based on Gehry’s first name: F A G E H (B natural in English). \nAnd Gabriella Smith’s new organ concerto Breathing Forests. As a composer and environmentalist\, Smith explores the complex relationship between humans\, forests\, climate change\, and fire—with the wood and power of the organ invoking the grandeur of the forest. \nThen buckle up for Strauss’ whirlwind of a symphonic poem\, well known for its use in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
