As part of the experience\, these student musicians will gain first-hand insight into the rehearsal process\, information on the repertoire and composers\, and the chance to take part in a dynamic and interactive workshop. \nI have the honor to act as a moderator for these very special events\, conversing with young musicians and their teachers as well as hearing about their own experiences participating in a music ensemble.

The performance comes on the heels of a double-triumph by Ortiz\, Dudamel\, and the LA Phil at this month’s GRAMMY® awards: they were awarded the Best Classical Compendium for Yanga and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Dzonot.  \nRevolución diamantina dramatizes the feminist “Glitter Revolution” in Ortiz’s native Mexico\, a feminist protest movement in Mexico City against rampant gender-based violence\, police brutality\, and systemic impunity. The movement began in August 2019 after protesters showered the city’s police chief with pink glitter to demand justice for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl by officers. I was able to interview Ortiz when the work was first premiered by the LA Phil in a concert version. Ortiz’s vision was always for a ballet version\, so this concert will be especially thrilling—the full realization of the composer. The Brazilian dance company\, Grupo Corpo\, will provide the movement magic\, while the Los Angeles Master Chorale brings powerful vocals to the presentation. \nI’ll also talk about Beethoven\, of course\, including why so many people see the Seventh Symphony as a celebration of dance.

DESCRIPTION:Another great opportunity to work with young musicians and talk with them about music history! The LA Phil’s Invited Rehearsal program is open to school or extra-curricular instrumental music ensembles—jazz\, wind ensemble\, orchestra\, chamber ensembles\, etc.—with players in middle and/or high school (grades 6-12). Students learn a little background about the works they will hear rehearsed live in Disney Hall. For this session\, students will be sitting in on the rehearsal of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor with soloist Yeol Eum Son and conductor Ryan Bancroft. \nFor this presentation\, I will help students understand more about Mozart’s experiences as a keyboardist—including a look at the fortepiano— and how his concertos combine orchestra and soloist in exciting ways.

The presentation will be narrated by Freddie Stroma (who played Cormac McLaggen) with accompanying film clips. I fully expect to see costumes and wands throughout the audience! \nThis family-friendly concert also includes Philharmonia Fantastique\, a “concerto for orchestra and animated film\,” combining music by Mason Bates\, direction by Gary Rydstrom\, and animation by Jim Capobianco. Philharmonia Fantastique “follows a magical Sprite on a musical journey through the instruments of the orchestra. By the film’s end\, the families of the orchestra overcome their differences to demonstrate “unity from diversity” in a spectacular finale.”

I had so much fun being a part of these special events before COVID hit\, and now I have the privilege of returning as a lecturer\, introducing works by Ravel and Saint-Saëns’ Third Symphony. Yes\, I will be including a clip from the movie Babe. 🙂 \nInvited rehearsals provide students and their instructors with a rare glimpse of the Los Angeles Philharmonic preparing for a concert. As part of the experience\, student ensembles gain first-hand insight into the rehearsal process\, information on the repertoire and composers\, and the chance to take part in a dynamic and interactive lesson with Upbeat Live faculty. \nThe program is open to school or extra-curricular instrumental music ensembles—jazz\, wind ensemble\, orchestra\, chamber ensembles\, etc.—with players in middle and/or high school (grades 6-12).

Gehry has crafted the scenic design for this Rheingold production. \nBefore each of the three performances\, I will be speaking with two members of the creative team: Alberto Arvelo (Director/Video Art Director) and Cori Ellison (Dramaturg). I’ll also offer some remarks on the musical style with audio examples to complement the opening discussion.
