SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Wagner’s “Die Walküre” (Act 3/ MAY 24)
DESCRIPTION:Continuing their exploration of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle—in semi-staged presentation—the LA Philharmonic presents the second opera of the massive tetralogy\, Die Walküre. Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and stage director Alberto Arvelo lead the production\, which features a set designed by the late Frank Gehry. Envisioned as a three-part saga—with each act presented individually—this production boasts a cast of international opera superstars\, including Ryan Speed Green as Wotan and Cristine Goerke as Brünnhilde. \nI’m thrilled to be introducing the heart-rending final act. My presentation will zoom out to consider Act 3 in context of the dramatic themes of Die Walküre and the Ring operas as a whole\, but will focus more closely on the relationship between father and daughter\, with a close musical exploration of Wagner’s use of leitmotiv technique in Wotan’s final goodbye to Brünnhilde.

SUMMARY:Moderator / LA Phil: Invited Rehearsals
DESCRIPTION:The Invited Rehearsal provides young musicians and their instructors with a rare glimpse of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as the orchestra prepares for a concert. As part of the experience\, these student musicians will gain first-hand insight into the rehearsal process\, information on the repertoire and composers\, and the chance to take part in a dynamic and interactive workshop. \nI have the honor to act as a moderator for these very special events\, conversing with young musicians and their teachers as well as hearing about their own experiences participating in a music ensemble.

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Messaien’s “Turangalîla-Symphonie”
DESCRIPTION:One of the most fascinating works of the orchestral repertoire\, the Turangalîla-Symphonie makes relatively rare appearances on concert stages: an 80-minute musical feast that demands numerous extra hands in the orchestra and extra stamina in general. Among its sonorous innovations is the inclusion of the ondes-martenot\, an electronic instrument first introduced in the late 1920s. \nMy presentation will focus on orienting listener to the layout of this musical world\, touching on sonic landmarks such as the 4 “cyclic themes\,” the sounds of birds\, the nods to Stravinsky\, and the overall theme of Love. Depending on the performance date\, I will also have the pleasure of interviewing acclaimed ondist Cynthia Millar and conductor Simone Young.

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Dudamel leads Beethoven and Ortiz (Mar 1)
DESCRIPTION:This is a dream program for me: Dudamel conducting Beethoven’s expansive Symphony No. 7—that sublime second movement—and the fully choreographed version of Gabriela Ortiz‘s emotionally riveting Revolución diamantina (Glitter Revolution\, an LA Philharmonic commission). The performance comes on the heels of a double-triumph by Ortiz\, Dudamel\, and the LA Phil at this month’s GRAMMY® awards: they were awarded the Best Classical Compendium for Yanga and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Dzonot.  \nRevolución diamantina dramatizes the feminist “Glitter Revolution” in Ortiz’s native Mexico\, a feminist protest movement in Mexico City against rampant gender-based violence\, police brutality\, and systemic impunity. The movement began in August 2019 after protesters showered the city’s police chief with pink glitter to demand justice for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl by officers. I was able to interview Ortiz when the work was first premiered by the LA Phil in a concert version. Ortiz’s vision was always for a ballet version\, so this concert will be especially thrilling—the full realization of the composer. The Brazilian dance company\, Grupo Corpo\, will provide the movement magic\, while the Los Angeles Master Chorale brings powerful vocals to the presentation. \nI’ll also talk about Beethoven\, of course\, including why so many people see the Seventh Symphony as a celebration of dance.

DESCRIPTION:Love that I will have the chance to talk about this crazy-good mashup of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor (featuring soloist Yeol Eum Son) and Grieg’s Symphony No. 4 “The Inextinguishable?” My presentation will get into the details of both of these sound worlds\, but first I’ll have the pleasure of chatting with guest conductor Ryan Bancroft about the first work of the night: Anders Hillborg Cloud Atlas\, which will have its US premiere. \nAnd the connection between Mozart and Cloud Atlas? GLASS HARMONICA!

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Philharmonic: “Invited Rehearsal” Lecturer
DESCRIPTION:Another great opportunity to work with young musicians and talk with them about music history! The LA Phil’s Invited Rehearsal program is open to school or extra-curricular instrumental music ensembles—jazz\, wind ensemble\, orchestra\, chamber ensembles\, etc.—with players in middle and/or high school (grades 6-12). Students learn a little background about the works they will hear rehearsed live in Disney Hall. For this session\, students will be sitting in on the rehearsal of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor with soloist Yeol Eum Son and conductor Ryan Bancroft. \nFor this presentation\, I will help students understand more about Mozart’s experiences as a keyboardist—including a look at the fortepiano— and how his concertos combine orchestra and soloist in exciting ways.

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Mahler’s Symphony 7 (Mar 1)
DESCRIPTION:Part of the LA Phil’s “Mahler Grooves Festival\,” this program features my favorite Mahler symphony: No. 7 in E minor\, frequently labeled “Song of the Night” for its many nocturnal evocations. My preconcert lecture will focus on the fascinating structure and programmatic suggestions of this expansive work\, as well as Mahler’s always inventive use of the orchestra. \nThe concert promises to be extraodinary\, led by Maestro Gustavo Dudamel\, who describes Mahler’s Seventh as “a symphony of everything: from chaos to glory\, sarcasm to tenderness\, from a funeral march to a seductive tango. It is a cosmic symphony of perfect construction and galactic emotional scope.”

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Rachmaninoff & Muhly
DESCRIPTION:Always thrilling to introduce a world premiere! This amazing program spotlights Nico Muhly‘s new Concerto Grosso\, framed by two Rachmaninoff powerhouses: Symphony No. 3 and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. I’m delighted to have an opportunity to chat with Muhly about his new work and the process of composing this LA Phil commission. SUMMARY:LA Phil’s Upbeat Live Lecture: Dudamel conducts “Harry Potter”
DESCRIPTION:As a Harry Potter fan\, of course I put my name in the Sorting Hat for a chance to introduce this concert\, the final installment of LA Phil’s John Williams Spotlight series. Opening with the renowned composers’ Flight to Neverland (from Peter-Pan redux Hook\, 1991)\, the program’s big draw is William’s “grand suite” for orchestra featuring beloved excerpts from his scores for the first three films. The presentation will be narrated by Freddie Stroma (who played Cormac McLaggen) with accompanying film clips. I fully expect to see costumes and wands throughout the audience! \nThis family-friendly concert also includes Philharmonia Fantastique\, a “concerto for orchestra and animated film\,” combining music by Mason Bates\, direction by Gary Rydstrom\, and animation by Jim Capobianco. Philharmonia Fantastique “follows a magical Sprite on a musical journey through the instruments of the orchestra. By the film’s end\, the families of the orchestra overcome their differences to demonstrate “unity from diversity” in a spectacular finale.”
