SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: Verdi's "Falstaff" (LA Opera virtual seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Verdi’s long journey to his final opera—his only successful comic work—is a lesson in perseverance and reinvention. He was 80 years old when Falstaff premiered at La Scala in Milan\, Italy—the same house where Verdi’s first work\, Oberto\, Count of Boniface\, premiered more than 50 years earlier. In between these landmark events of the composer’s professional life\, he lost a wife and two children to illness\, experienced scathing failure\, and buried himself in work until reaching such a level of popular success that he was able to subsidize a retirement home for professional musicians. \nMy presentation—“Verdi (finally) gets the last laugh: an introduction to Falstaff”—will trace this long arch of Verdi’s life\, leading to the creative partnership with librettist-composer Arrigo Boito\, with whom he wrote his last two operas. I will also consider why comedy proved—and continues to be—a major challenge for opera composers in the late 19th century to the present. \nThe “Exploring Opera” learning series also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: "La Bohème" (LA Opera virtual seminar)
DESCRIPTION:What fun to share insights about Puccini’s most popular opera as part of Los Angeles Opera’s “Exploring Opera” virtual seminars\, open to all opera lovers! My presentation will focus on the winning formula—the exciting stylistic elements in both the libretto and the score— cooked up by Puccini and his collaborators\, Luigi Illica & Giuseppe Giacosa. Kinetic ensembles\, realistic dialogue\, “songs” in the story world of the opera\, and of course those marvelous Puccini melodies are just some of the elements we will explore. \nThe “Exploring Opera” seminars also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Verdi's "Rigoletto"
DESCRIPTION:LA Opera’s production of Rigoletto\, starring powerhouse baritone Quinn Kelsey in the title role\, promises to be a thoroughly gripping season ender! And I will kickoff the “Opera for Educators” seminar dedicated to this work with a look at Verdi’s approach to the Victor Hugo play (Le roi s’amuse or The King Amuses Himself) on which Rigoletto is based. More specifically I will talk about both Hugo’s and Verdi’s choice to highlight a marginalized and disabled character as morally complex—full of love for his daughter but vengeful animosity towards the courtly world where he plays the jester. \nThe “Opera for Educators” program—an initiative of LA Opera Connects—offers half-day seminars on Zoom\, each of which explores one of the main-stage works of the current season. An array of scholars\, educators\, and artists come together to enrich participants’ appreciation and understanding of historic and contemporary opera. \nLAUSD teachers are able to get professional-development credit\, but all opera lovers are welcome to join the seminars!

SUMMARY:LA Opera Connects / Opera for Educators: Golijov's "Ainadamar"
DESCRIPTION:For this exciting session of the “Opera for Educators” seminars\, I will familiarize participants with the eclectic and deeply dramatic musical style of Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. The many influences in Golijov’s style\, drawn from his many cultural and ethnic identities—Latin American\, Jewish traditional\, Middle Eastern\, and European Western classical—contribute to his distinctive and accessible compositional voice. Since Ainadamar is Golijov’s first opera\, I will focus instead on one of his earlier major works that mixes dramatic story\, theatrical spectacle (including dance)\, and music: La Pasión según San Marcos (“St. Mark’s Passion”)\, a Latin American setting of the Passion.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Mozart's Così fan tutte
DESCRIPTION:So excited to be in my special wheelhouse for this seminar: Mozart opera! My presentation will focus on the gender politics behind this comic opera with its problematic accusation that “women are like that\,” meaning not trustworthy in matters of love. The LAO production\, directed by the fabulous Shawna Lucey\, brilliant meets the challenge of this work. \nThe “Opera for Educators” program—an initiative of LA Opera Connects—offers half-day seminars on Zoom\, each of which explores one of the main-stage works of the current season. SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Madama Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:My introductory lecture for this particular seminar sets up a day of exploration and critique critique Puccini’s Madama Butterfly—of one of the most popular\, and also thematically challenging\, works of the operatic canon. I will look at the historical background of the opera\, including contemporary events that may have affected the infamously bad reception of the premiere\, and also the colonialist/racially biased language and depictions of the opera’s sources and the libretto itself. Other presenters include Dr. Mariko Takahashi (CSU Fullerton\, History)\, Dr. Rebecca Corbett (USC\, East Asian Library)\, and koto performer Yuki Yasuda. \nFor the Opera for Educators seminars\, Los Angeles Opera Connects brings together experts in music\, history\, languages\, and more to lead participants on a scholarly exploration of the current Los Angeles Opera main-stage season—streaming live through Zoom to wherever you are. All are welcome to join and learn more about opera\, and teachers get an extra bonus by earning LAUSD Salary Points.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Opera Overview
DESCRIPTION:The kick-off seminar for LAUSD teachers and other opera-curious people! We open with an overview of the art form\, and my talk will look at the three “pillars” of opera—the music\, dramatic text (libretto)\, and stage production. In this brief introduction\, we will explore the musical styles and dramatic themes from the earliest canonic opera\, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607) to Adams’ Dr. Atomic (2000). \nFor the Opera for Educators seminars\, Los Angeles Opera Connects brings together experts in music\, history\, languages\, and more to lead participants on a scholarly exploration of the current Los Angeles Opera main-stage season—streaming live through Zoom to wherever you are. SUMMARY:Pre-performance Lecture: LA Opera’s “La Traviata”
DESCRIPTION:I will be giving the pre-performance lecture on one of the most popular opera in the canonic repertoire\, Verdi’s La traviata! This new production by Shawna Lucey (General Director and CEO of Opera San Jose ) drew enthusiastic reviews with audiences and critics in San Francisco and is now ready to charm opera lovers in Los Angeles. Rachel Willis-Sørensen stars as Violetta\, with tenor Liparit Avetisyan as her beloved Alfredo and Kihun Yoon as Father Germont. \nI will explore the ideas behind Lucey’s “feminist take” on Traviata\, with a look at the woman—Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis— who inspired the character of Violetta by way of Alexander Dumas fils’ novella and play\, The Lady of the Camellias.

SUMMARY:LA Opera: Opera in the Classroom Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Part of the LAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars\, this particular event aims to educate—and inspire—K-12 teachers about ways to incorporate opera into their lesson plans. My presentation\, “Fairy Tales\, Opera\, and the Art of Retelling\,” will consider how fairy tales narratives were transformed in two canonic works: Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Rossini’s Cinderella. I will also explore the ways in which these stories might resonate with today’s young people\, including critical issues such as food insecurity and parental abuse or neglect. \n“Opera for Educator” seminars are held via Zoom and provide an exciting opportunity for K-12 teachers to earn LAUSD salary points and UCLA extension credit. Register on the Opera for Educator’s webpage. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Verdi's "La traviata"
DESCRIPTION:In this “Opera for Educators” seminar—offered by LA Opera Connects—I’ll be talking about the role of production in creating new meanings of older works such as La traviata\, Verdi’s most enduringly popular opera. LA Opera is presenting the work in a new production by director Shawna Lucey\, who takes an explicitly feminist approach\, grounding her interpretation in the historical realities of the French courtesan Marie Duplessis\, who inspired the character of Violetta. \nOther presenters will look explore the sources for La traviata‘s narrative\, the world of courtesans in mid-19th-century Paris\, and contemporary film adaptations such as Moulin Rouge and Pretty Woman. \nLAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars are held via Zoom and provide an exciting opportunity for K-12 teachers to earn LAUSD salary points and UCLA extension credit. SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Zemlinsky's "The Dwarf" and Still's "Highway 1\, USA"
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Opera presents a double feature of neglected one-act operas : Alexander Zemlinsky‘s Der Zwerg (The Dwarf\, 1922) and William Grant Still‘s Highway 1\, USA\, which was first completed in 1946\, but had to wait nearly two decades for its premiere. My introductory talk for teachers and opera lovers will contextualize the works in the cultural worlds of the composers (both of whom suffered from virulent—even murderous—racism) and touch on the   experiences and aesthetic ideals that influences their musical styles. \nThe LAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars are held via Zoom and welcome both teachers (with the opportunity for professional development credits) and non-teachers: the only pre-requisite is a curiosity about opera!  Register on the Opera for Educator’s webpage. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
DESCRIPTION:My contribution to this Los Angeles Opera Connects seminar for K-12 educators and opera lovers will be an exploration of composer Gabriela Lena Frank and her relationship to Hispanic and Latin American culture\, history\, and language as well as her orchestral “palette\,” the ways in which she paints with orchestral timbres. \nFrank’s story as a creative musical artist is also shaped by her low-profound hearing loss\, which occurred when she was very young. Her understanding and experience of sound is layered and nuanced through this lived reality. \nMy talk will look at excerpts from Frank’s Apu (2017\, an orchestral tone poem) and Contested Eden (2021)\, written in the aftermath of the horrific 2020 wild fires that terrorized Californian already living on edge during the COVID-19 lockdowns. \nFrank’s first opera El Último Sueno de Frida y Diego will have its Los Angeles Opera premiere beginning Nov. 18 through Dec. 9. \nFor ticket information visit the Los Angeles Opera page.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: The Barber of Seville
DESCRIPTION:Love sharing the multifaceted world of opera with K-12 teachers and opera lovers! For this “Opera for Educators” seminar\, I will be discussing Rossini’s perfect “recipe” for comic opera\, the musical elements that made him the most popular composer in Europe during the 1810s-20s. Easily his most performed opera today\, The Barber of Seville offers an especially accessible and entertaining entry into the live opera experience. \nThe Opera for Educators seminars are opening to the public in general\, with deep-dives into most of the works of the current season\, so check them out! SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Otello
DESCRIPTION:As part of this seminar for local educators and operas lovers\, I will  speak about the historical context for Verdi’s final dramatic opera\, Otello (1887)\, which the composer completed after a 16-year self-imposed withdrawal from opera composition. We will explore Verdi’s extraordinary gift for vocal characterization and nuance\, particularly in the roles of Desdemona and Iago who represent the moral poles of the narrative. \nThe powerhouse cast is led by LA Opera Artist in Residence Russell Thomas in the title role\, Rachel Willis-Sørensen in her company debut as the doomed Desdemona\, and Igor Golovatenko as the sadistic Iago\, whose sadistic plotting drives the narrative to its tragic final scene.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Pelléas et Mélisande
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Opera is staging Debussy’s only complete opera\, Pélleas et Mélisande. A masterful response to the stylistic gauntlet thrown down by Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde\, Debussy’s Pélleas sets to music the Symbolist play of Maurice Maeterlinck—another take on the “star-crossed-lovers” theme. I’ll be looking specifically at the many influences that helped to shape Debussy’s unique\, modernist musical language from the music of the Wagner to the avant-garde (and anti-German) model of Erik Satie\, from the colorful harmonies and orchestrations of the Russian Five to the unfamiliar sounds from Asia that he heard at the 1889 Paris Exposition. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pre-performance Lectures: LA Opera's "Tosca" (all performances)
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Opera presents Puccini’s immortal Tosca—a suspenseful political drama and love story centered on the fictional diva and force of nature\, Floria Tosca. Dr. Brown-Montesano will delve into some of the essential influences on Puccini’s creative thinking for this particular opera\, from the evocative backdrop of Rome during the Napoleonic Wars to the real-life aesthetic challenges of Italian verismo and Wagnerian concepts of music-drama. \nFrom the Los Angeles Opera: The cast for this production is led by four of the greatest artists of their generations. Soprano—and UCLA alum—Angel Blue takes on the iconic role of Puccini’s glamorous but tough-as-nails heroine\, with tenors Michael Fabiano and Gregory Kunde sharing the role of Mario Cavaradossi\, the rebel who becomes the target of the most dangerous man in Rome. SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Tosca
DESCRIPTION:Tosca: Puccini’s ultimate prima donna! This Opera for Educators session is open to the public\, not just educators! Dr. Brown-Montesano will delve into the aesthetics of Italian “verismo” (“realism”) and consider opera’s central conflict between celebrated diva Floria Tosca and the sadistic Baron Scarpia. (Tickets $20) \nAbout the Opera: Floria Tosca\, the famous opera singer\, seems to have it all. Audiences cherish her artistry—and adore hearing about her tempestuous offstage romances. But as storms of repression and rebellion rage throughout Italy\, the diva is forced to play a real-life role she never imagined. \nTorn between devotion to her lover and the machinations of a treacherous sociopath who will do anything in his power to break her down\, she’s trapped in an utterly impossible predicament\, with fatal consequences for them all. But this prima donna isn’t going down without a fight. \nThe cast is led by four of the greatest artists of their generations. Soprano Angel Blue takes on the iconic role of Puccini’s glamorous but tough-as-nails heroine\, with tenors Michael Fabiano and Gregory Kunde sharing the role of Mario Cavaradossi\, the rebel who becomes the target of the most dangerous man in Rome. Bass-baritone Ryan McKinny is the evil Scarpia\, who likes nothing more than seeing his victims suffer. In her company debut\, trailblazingUkrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv leads a heart-pounding production staged by the legendary director John Caird.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Rhiannon Gidden's Omar
DESCRIPTION:Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels bring their new opera—Omar—to Los Angeles. This presentation is open to the public\, not just educators! Co-presentation with Dr. Tiffany Kuo on the sounds of contemporary opera and the musical styles of Omar’s co-composers. (Tickets $20.) \nAbout Omar: In 1807\, a 37-year-old scholar living in West Africa was captured and forced aboard a ship bound for Charleston\, South Carolina. Omar Ibn Said’s life and Muslim faith are remembered and retold in this inspirational West Coast premiere inspired by his remarkable 1831 autobiography (the only known surviving American slavery narrative written in Arabic). \nSet in the shifting darkness of memory and imagination\, Omar follows his compelling journey from a peaceful life in his homeland to enslavement in a violent\, foreign world. Lost in the wilderness of his thoughts and his stolen life\, he’s haunted by memories of his family and the people he encounters along the way. Through it all\, he somehow remains true to himself and his faith\, against all odds. The luminous score incorporates distinctive West African traditions with traditional opera instrumentation. \nLearn more about the creative process of Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels in this New York Times article.
