SUMMARY:Invited Rehearsal / Ives Dvorak LA Phil

And it’s my job—as facilitator\, teacher and guide—to prepare students for what they’re about to hear and see. \nThis invited rehearsal features excerpts from the following program: \n\nIves – The Unanswered Question\nIves – Symphony No. 4\nDvorak – Symphony No. 9\, “New World”

SUMMARY:Concerto Winner / Colburn Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Colburn’s Concerto Competition winner Sanga Yang kicks off the Colburn Orchestra season by performing Schumann’s notoriously challenging Cello Concerto. LA Opera conductor James Conlon leads a program also featuring Weber’s Euryanthe Overture and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3. \nSchumann’s cello concerto is his last composition before entering an asylum\, surrendering to the mental illness that censured his creative life. As Sanga’s teacher\, and my Colburn colleague\, Clive Greensmith says\, “As a human being\, as an artist\, this is a piece that helps you become more sensitive and more deeply aware of the emotional content of music. It separates artists from mere technicians.” \nI host a pre-concert interview with James Conlon at 6:45pm\, and the down beat is at 7:30pm. \nPlease note: regular admission is $15\, and premium seating is $30.

SUMMARY:SummerFest Finale / Nicholas McGegan
DESCRIPTION:The finale concert of SummerFest Music Director Inon Barnatan’s inaugural season celebrates the concerto grosso. Conductor and harpsichordist Nicholas McGegan leads the SummerFest Chamber Orchestra. Great masterworks pair in exciting ways with modern visions of the form. And it all ties back to Opening Night’s exploration of the deep connection of music across centuries. \nIn my pre-concert talk for the finale concert—(7pm)—we’ll explore the concerto grosso’s social history. It’s a charming string-centric genre that first arose in seventeenth-century Italy\, delighting audiences and inspiring some of the most celebrated Baroque composers. We will consider the special qualities of the Baroque concerto grosso. And explore how contemporary composers such as Zwilich and Norman have woven some of these elements into fascinating fusions of the musical “then” and “now.”

SUMMARY:LA Phil / Double Mass Program
DESCRIPTION:UpBeat Live with Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano.\nFor listeners used to the brawny drama of Beethoven’s Fifth and the epic vision of his Missa solemnis\, the composer’s Mass in C may surprise with its tranquility and beauty. SUMMARY:La Jolla Music Society / Finckel & Han
DESCRIPTION:Prelude Pre-Concert Lecture @ 7pm (Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano).\nConcert @ 8pm\nDavid Finckel and Wu Han are recipients of the 2010 Musical America’s Musicians of the Year award\, one of the highest honors granted by the music industry. \nHe was a protégé of Mstislav Rostropovich; she\, a veteran of top-flight musical training grounds like Aspen and Marlboro. Critics have praised the boldness\, imagination\, and collaborative intimacy of their work—often trumpeting his laser-like focus and her innate spark. \nBut performing is merely a starting point for this irrepressible husband and wife team\, whose résumé includes the stewardship of important arts organizations like the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music@Menlo; a history of innovation in programming\, recording\, and outreach; and a commitment to fostering young talent. Along the way\, they have built audiences and shaped a new wave of players. To call them overachievers would be an understatement. \nProgram\nTo be announced. \n  \n

Sadly\, it turned out to be the very last work Donatoni completed. I was deeply moved when I saw the title and the dedication. The master had dictated his last composition to his assistants as he was no longer able to write himself.” \nAlso featured is a showpiece for a widely acclaimed young pianist—the masterpiece Ravel wrote for a pianist who lost his right arm in World War I. \nProgram\n\nDebussy – Iberia\nRavel – Concerto for the Left hand\n\nIntermission  \n\nDonatoni – ESA (In cauda V) – LA Phil Commission\nRespighi – Pines of Rome
