SUMMARY:Program commentator: K17 presents "Let's Talk" | Schubert\, Sirota\, and Drubich
DESCRIPTION:A new collaboration is always exciting\, but K17’s new concert concept—”Let’s Talk”—promises to be an especially good time! I will be leading the educationally chatty first half of the concert\, guiding listeners through the world of Schubert’s String Quartet in D Minor\, “Death and the Maiden.”  The second half of the concert will feature works by Jonah Sirota and Anna Drubich—also musicians in the ensemble!—who will share their experiences and inspirations as composers. \nAnd\, of course\, K17 brings together an amazing group of performing artists in addition to Drubich (piano) and Sirota (viola): Assistant Concertmaster of LACO Tereza Stanislav\,  fellow LACO violinist Jessica Guideri\, and  K17 co-founder/cellist Evgeny Tonkha. \nFrom the organizers: The K17 mission is to integrate its audience with the leading musicians and musical masterpieces of the world amid the intimate atmosphere of an architecturally stunning residence. Following each K17 concert\, members are invited to share conversation with featured artists over an exploration of wine curated by the foremost small-yield vineyards of France\, Italy and Spain. More than a concert series\, K17 is an exploration of a culture where music\, wine\, architecture and thought intersect to expand the mind and feed the soul. Please join us on our unique journey. \nWine\, music\, a beautiful venue\, and a musicologist with great shoes? WINNING. 😉 \n

SUMMARY:Moderator & Educator: LA Phil's "Invited Rehearsals" for Schools
DESCRIPTION:Invited Rehearsals provide young musicians and their instructors with a rare glimpse of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as the orchestra prepares for a concert. As part of the experience\, these student musicians—representing classroom instrumental ensembles from across Los Angeles County—gain first-hand insight into the rehearsal process\, guidance on ways to listen to emusic\, and the chance to present their own ensemble’s mission and values to the group. \nI am delighted to have collaborated with the LA Phil Learning Department for many years on these joyful educational events! This year\, in addition to moderating the presentations and Q&A\, I also will be offering student some tips about how to listen more actively to the musical sounds they will hear in the rehearsal. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pre-performance Lecture: LA Opera presents Bernstein's “Candide" (Nov 21)
DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Opera is bringing Bernstein’s marvelously satirical stage work Candide (1956) back to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion! The fabulous cast includes Duke Kim as Candide\, Meghan Picerno as Cunegonde\, the indefatigable Patti Lupone as the Old Lady\, and actor Scott Bakula—flashbacks to Quantum Leap!— in the dual speaking role of Voltaire and Dr. Pangloss. \nFor my pre-performance presentation\, I will explore the work’s prolonged metamorphosis (spanning over 30 years between its first and final versions)\, its dazzling mix of musical styles\, and its use of satire to make social and philosophical arguments—taking its cue from Voltaire’s original 1759 novella. \nPre-performance talks take place in the Eva & Marc Stern Grand Hall on the second floor of Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and are free to all ticketholders.
