SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: Verdi's "Falstaff" (LA Opera virtual seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Verdi’s long journey to his final opera—his only successful comic work—is a lesson in perseverance and reinvention. He was 80 years old when Falstaff premiered at La Scala in Milan\, Italy—the same house where Verdi’s first work\, Oberto\, Count of Boniface\, premiered more than 50 years earlier. In between these landmark events of the composer’s professional life\, he lost a wife and two children to illness\, experienced scathing failure\, and buried himself in work until reaching such a level of popular success that he was able to subsidize a retirement home for professional musicians. \nMy presentation—“Verdi (finally) gets the last laugh: an introduction to Falstaff”—will trace this long arch of Verdi’s life\, leading to the creative partnership with librettist-composer Arrigo Boito\, with whom he wrote his last two operas. I will also consider why comedy proved—and continues to be—a major challenge for opera composers in the late 19th century to the present. \nThe “Exploring Opera” learning series also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: "Akhnaten" (LA Opera virtual public seminar)
DESCRIPTION:My kickoff lecture for this terrific FREE series of public lectures from LA Opera Connects will look into the musical idiom commonly labeled “minimalism” and more specifically Philip Glass’s Ahknaten\, the third opera in this “Portrait Trilogy”—operas about people that shifted the course of history. While the first two of these operas—Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha—center on 20th-century figures (Einstein and Gandhi\, respectively)\, Akhnaten takes us back Ancient Egypt\, but with a sensibility that still rings as contemporary. \nThe “Exploring Opera” seminars also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: "La Bohème" (LA Opera virtual seminar)
DESCRIPTION:What fun to share insights about Puccini’s most popular opera as part of Los Angeles Opera’s “Exploring Opera” virtual seminars\, open to all opera lovers! My presentation will focus on the winning formula—the exciting stylistic elements in both the libretto and the score— cooked up by Puccini and his collaborators\, Luigi Illica & Giuseppe Giacosa. Kinetic ensembles\, realistic dialogue\, “songs” in the story world of the opera\, and of course those marvelous Puccini melodies are just some of the elements we will explore. \nThe “Exploring Opera” seminars also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Seong-Jin Cho
DESCRIPTION:My preperformance talk will introduce the recital program of pianist Seong-Jin Cho\, an artist who is wowing crowds over the globe. This particular musical journey includes a delightful Haydn Sonata\, through Ravel’s little minuet built on Haydn’s name and his more celebrated Miroirs\, a melancholy side trip through Mozart’s Adagio and finally on to the behemoth of Liszt’s “Dante” Sonata. \nSoeng-Jin Cho was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won First Prize at the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw\, and his career has rapidly ascended since. Cho’s latest recording is his solo album\, The Handel Project\, released in February 2023\, and in August 2021\, he released Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Scherzi with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda for Deutsche Grammophon. \n

SUMMARY:Osher Lecture\, Bach’s Goldberg Variations: A Musical and Cinematic Exploration
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be an Invited Speaker at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego! And I’m revisiting one of my favorite topics: Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations. \nWhen Bach published the “Goldberg” Variations in 1741\, he could not have known that some two centuries later this famously demanding work for keyboard would ignite the musical world and claim a significant place in American popular culture of the latter twentieth century. This class will explore the fascinating structure and musical styles of the Goldbergs as well as its peculiar role in contemporary fiction and film. \nFor more information\, visit the course page or OSHER membership page. One week of free membership! The course is offered live and remotely via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Free LAO Zoom Class / Bel Canto Dramedy
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Topic – Bel Canto “Dramedy”: Mixed Musical Styles in Cenerentola\nBy the time he wrote Cenerentola\, Rossini had already mastered a wildly successful comic style and had proven his skill at serious opera as well. For Cenerentola\, Rossini mixed his musical styles more freely\, adding dimension to the characters and the overall story. During this session\, we will listen to examples of these different musical styles and how they enhance Rossini’s Cinderella story. \nAbout this 4-week course… \nReady to rethink what you know about opera history? SUMMARY:Free LAO Zoom Class / Musical Artist as Hero
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Topic – The Musical Artist as German Hero: Romanticism\, Myth\, and Wagner’s Tannhäuser\nThis week we will delve into the two medieval stories that Wagner combined for his libretto: the knight-poet seeking redemption after succumbing to Venus’s erotic pleasures and the famous singing contests held at Wartburg Castle. These two German-centric narratives also offered Wagner the perfect vehicle for celebrating the (super) power of the voice. \nAbout this 4-week course… \nReady to rethink what you know about opera history? SUMMARY:Zoom Course / Interwar Period Musical Culture
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano will guide LA Opera Board members through an exploration of music from the interwar period (1919—1939)\, an era that witnessed an astonishing variety of aesthetic and stylistic developments in western Classical music. \nLectures will delve into the historical context and aesthetic ideals of individual works and related arts and will include discussion of Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex (part of LA Opera’s 2021-2022 season). \nThis course is a 4-lecture reprise of Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano’s popular Colburn Community School adult ed class\, presented to assist the LA Opera Board’s evaluation of Zoom-hosted music history lectures for possible future programming in LAO’s community outreach schedule. \n

SUMMARY:Zoom Course / Exploring Beethoven's Ninth
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven’s Ninth is iconic. But why does it persist as a cultural touchstone\, well into the 21st century? This is my inaugural Zoom course for the Colburn Community School. So I’ve invented a class for adult learners—from Beethoven super fans to musical novices—where we’ll explore the musical structure\, mythos and echoing disco reverb of Beethoven’s last symphony.

SUMMARY:Zoom Class / Violin Bootcamp + Music History
DESCRIPTION:As many of you know\, Colburn has a Community School whose mission is training the next generation of musicians and patrons. This summer I have the pleasure of teaching in the Violin Bootcamp program for the first time\, thanks to an invitation from my colleague Aimee Kreston. I appreciate the invitation and Aimee’s mission: to provide her students more context for what they’re learning\, enriching them both culturally and technically.
