SUMMARY:Invited Lecturer: Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:My first time being part of the Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival\, which is a real treat. I love the city and can’t wait to meet the lovely community at SCMS! \nMy presentation for their new lecture series will be on Rebecca Clarke\, particularly on her earlier life leading up to the composition of Morpheus for piano and violin—a work she originally premiered under the pseudonym Anthony Trent. Clarke’s resolve to work professionally in music and her impressive body of work is an inspiration for all. I am fortunate to have access to a number of documents\, including her memoir\, thanks to Christopher Johnson\, Clarke’s great-nephew-by-marriage who owns Clarke’s rights and worked with her during her final decade and catalogued her compositions\, with her assistance. \nI will be giving this lecture on July 21-22 in two venues—the Seattle Chamber Music Society Center and Seattle Women’s University Club—and as a Zoom webinar.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Verdi's "La traviata"
DESCRIPTION:In this “Opera for Educators” seminar—offered by LA Opera Connects—I’ll be talking about the role of production in creating new meanings of older works such as La traviata\, Verdi’s most enduringly popular opera. LA Opera is presenting the work in a new production by director Shawna Lucey\, who takes an explicitly feminist approach\, grounding her interpretation in the historical realities of the French courtesan Marie Duplessis\, who inspired the character of Violetta. \nOther presenters will look explore the sources for La traviata‘s narrative\, the world of courtesans in mid-19th-century Paris\, and contemporary film adaptations such as Moulin Rouge and Pretty Woman. \nLAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars are held via Zoom and provide an exciting opportunity for K-12 teachers to earn LAUSD salary points and UCLA extension credit. Register on the Opera for Educator’s webpage. \n

SUMMARY:Osher Lecture\, Bach’s Goldberg Variations: A Musical and Cinematic Exploration
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be an Invited Speaker at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego! And I’m revisiting one of my favorite topics: Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations. \nWhen Bach published the “Goldberg” Variations in 1741\, he could not have known that some two centuries later this famously demanding work for keyboard would ignite the musical world and claim a significant place in American popular culture of the latter twentieth century. This class will explore the fascinating structure and musical styles of the Goldbergs as well as its peculiar role in contemporary fiction and film. \nFor more information\, visit the course page or OSHER membership page. One week of free membership! The course is offered live and remotely via Zoom.
