Featuring works by Shostakovich\, Debussy\, and Dvořák\, this rare collaboration brings together extraordinary individual artistry in a performance praised as “a supergroup to savour” (The Arts Desk). \nThe evening’s program begins with two student works by future musical titans Claude Debussy (Piano Trio in G major) and Shostakovich (Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 8); the final work of the evening is  Dvořák’s ravishing Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor\, Op. 65. My presentation will highlight some of the fascinating musical and contextual stories of these specific works—as well as the piano trio as a genre. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The times we live in… Due to the unpredictable visa policies of the current administration\, only two of the originally scheduled Azura Trio—Duncan McDougall (violin) and Yanfeng “Tony” Bai (piano)—will be playing on this concert. Sadly\, cellist Yejin Hong will no be able to join\, which is a real shame since this fabulous piano trio—currently in residence at the Colburn Conservatory—won the Grand Prize Medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2026. \nBut the show will go on! McDougall and Bai have quickly pivoted to a duo program\, with works by the three B’s (Bach\, Beethoven\, and Brahms) and Clara Schumann.  My preconcert lecture—an add-on ($15) for single-ticket purchasers\, but free for members—takes place one hour before the performance and includes with wine and hors d’oeuvres. \nFounded with the vision of providing familiar and comforting entertainment to the influx of émigrés who arrived in Los Angeles after World War II\, the Music Guild is one of the oldest chamber music presenters in the greater Southern California area\, dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of our community through world-class performances and music educational programs.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society SummerFest 2026—”What if″
DESCRIPTION:This compelling SummerFest program brings together very different masterworks “shaped by youth\, urgency\, and historical circumstance\, inviting us to imagine what could have been.” Lili Boulanger’s Two Pieces for Violin and Piano—a Nocturne (1911) and a Cortège (1914)—stands as one of her most frequently performed chamber works\, capturing her brilliant command of color\, texture\, and late-French Impressionism just a few years before her tragic death at age 24.  Viktor Ullmann’s String Quartet No. 3\, Op. 46—written in 1943 during Ullmann’s imprisonment at the Theresienstadt (Terezín) concentration camp—represents both a peak of late-Second Viennese School expressionism and an act of absolute cultural resistance under horrifying circumstances. Written two years before his untimely death at age 38\, George Gershwin’s landmark 1935 opera Porgy and Bess challenged ideas about American musical theater; virtuoso violinist Jascha Heifetz paid homage to Gershwin’s legacy in this “Selections from Porgy and Bess”—an pinnacle of the twentieth-century violin transcription repertoire. Finally\, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater (1736) is one of the most celebrated\, widely printed\, and frequently performed sacred works of the entire 18th century. Composed in the final weeks of the composer’s life\, it represents a watershed moment in music history—the bridge where the strict\, contrapuntal religious music of the Baroque era yields to the deeply expressive\, emotional directness of the emerging Galant style. My presentation will consider all of these works in the spirit of “What if\,” placing them in the context of their creation and charting their broader influence. \nLed by Music Director Inon Barnatan\, the LJMS SummerFest 2026 will offer 21 concerts\, 50+ free community events\, and over 100 world‑class musicians from around the globe. SUMMARY:Preconcert Presentation: The Music Guild / SummerFest 2026 (Sords-Walz-Durkovic Trio)
DESCRIPTION:A new adventure! I am excited to kick-off the Music Guild’s 2026 SummerFest with a preconcert presentation on a wide-ranging program. The Sords-Walz-Durkovic Trio—violinist Andrew Sords\, longtime LA Opera principal cellist John Walz\, and pianist Timothy Durkovic—will present piano trios by Mozart and Mendelssohn as well as works by Brahms\, Handel\, and Massenet. A highlight in my book will be Louis Spohr’s arrangement of Schubert’s Erlkönig for baritone\, violin\, and piano\, featuring the fortuitously named Daniel Singer\, an accomplished bass-baritone and music director. \nThe preconcert program—and add-on ($15)  for single-ticket purchasers\, but free for members—takes place one hour before the performance and includes with wine and hors d’oeuvres. I hope to see many of my fellow chamber-music lovers at the show! \n Founded with the vision of providing familiar and comforting entertainment to the influx of émigrés who arrived in Los Angeles after World War II\, the Music Guild is one of the oldest chamber music presenters in the greater Southern California area\, dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of our community through world-class performances and music educational programs. \n

Envisioned as a three-part saga—with each act presented individually—this production boasts a cast of international opera superstars\, including Ryan Speed Green as Wotan and Cristine Goerke as Brünnhilde. \nI’m thrilled to be introducing the heart-rending final act. My presentation will zoom out to consider Act 3 in context of the dramatic themes of Die Walküre and the Ring operas as a whole\, but will focus more closely on the relationship between father and daughter\, with a close musical exploration of Wagner’s use of leitmotiv technique in Wotan’s final goodbye to Brünnhilde.

DESCRIPTION:Heading back to the (almost) springtime desert\, this time to introduce an all-Brahms program by the San Diego Symphony with music director Rafael Payare! The orchestra is partnering with violinist Leonidas Kavakos for Brahms’s smokin’ Violin Concerto in D Major and closing the program with Symphony No. 3. \nI will explore a major connection between these two works: titanic violinist Joseph Joachim\, one of Brahms’s oldest musical friends. Joachim advised Brahms on the concerto and played the premiere. And Symphony No. 3 pays homage to Joachim in a cheeky way\, rethinking a musical motive once associated with the violinist.

The performance comes on the heels of a double-triumph by Ortiz\, Dudamel\, and the LA Phil at this month’s GRAMMY® awards: they were awarded the Best Classical Compendium for Yanga and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Dzonot.  \nRevolución diamantina dramatizes the feminist “Glitter Revolution” in Ortiz’s native Mexico\, a feminist protest movement in Mexico City against rampant gender-based violence\, police brutality\, and systemic impunity. The movement began in August 2019 after protesters showered the city’s police chief with pink glitter to demand justice for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl by officers. I was able to interview Ortiz when the work was first premiered by the LA Phil in a concert version. Ortiz’s vision was always for a ballet version\, so this concert will be especially thrilling—the full realization of the composer. The Brazilian dance company\, Grupo Corpo\, will provide the movement magic\, while the Los Angeles Master Chorale brings powerful vocals to the presentation. \nI’ll also talk about Beethoven\, of course\, including why so many people see the Seventh Symphony as a celebration of dance.

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Dudamel leads Beethoven and Ortiz(Feb 27)
DESCRIPTION:This is a dream program for me: Dudamel conducting Beethoven’s expansive Symphony No. 7—that sublime second movement—and the fully choreographed version of Gabriela Ortiz‘s emotionally riveting Revolución diamantina (Glitter Revolution\, an LA Philharmonic commission). The performance comes on the heels of a double-triumph by Ortiz\, Dudamel\, and the LA Phil at this month’s GRAMMY® awards: they were awarded the Best Classical Compendium for Yanga and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Dzonot.  \nRevolución diamantina dramatizes the feminist “Glitter Revolution” in Ortiz’s native Mexico\, a feminist protest movement in Mexico City against rampant gender-based violence\, police brutality\, and systemic impunity. The movement began in August 2019 after protesters showered the city’s police chief with pink glitter to demand justice for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl by officers. I was able to interview Ortiz when the work was first premiered by the LA Phil in a concert version. Ortiz’s vision was always for a ballet version\, so this concert will be especially thrilling—the full realization of the composer. The Brazilian dance company\, Grupo Corpo\, will provide the movement magic\, while the Los Angeles Master Chorale brings powerful vocals to the presentation. \nI’ll also talk about Beethoven\, of course\, including why so many people see the Seventh Symphony as a celebration of dance.

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Chalifour and Friends / Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:Illness kept me away from the season opener of the wonderful Mason Home Concerts\, a very special series of chamber-music concerts held in a home “salon” on the beautiful Westside. So I am extra excited for the second concert—”Chalifour and Friends”—featuring violinist and longtime concertmaster of the LA Phil\, Martin Chalifour together with local music stars Ambroise Aubrun (violin)\, Jonah Sirota (viola)\, Cecilia Tsan (cello)\, and David Kaplan (piano). \nI will be offering a short introduction to the night’s program\, which includes Debussy’s Cello Sonata\, two Kreisler works for violin & piano\, and the first movement of Todd Mason’s String Quartet No. 1. But the big lift for the evening will be Brahms’s monumental Piano Quintet! YUM. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Preconcert Lecture: Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic presents Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Sure\, it’s a drive from Los Angeles to the Coachella Valley\, but the enthusiastic community of lovers and the star-level concerts presented by the Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic are worth it! I have the pleasure of introducing what promises to be an astounding performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and their Music Director Emeritus for Life\, Riccardo Muti. The program—Brahms Symphony No. 4\, Stravinsky’s Divertimento from Le baiser de la fée\, and Ravel’s Bolero—is made for showing off orchestral color and pleasing audiences. \nMy preconcert lecture will look at how composers borrow ideas and elements from the past and sources outside their immediate cultural context.

DESCRIPTION:What a terrific concert! The London-based Philharmonia Orchestra\, with principal conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali\, will be joined by pianist Víkingur Ólafsson\, known for his extraordinary technical precision and brainy artistry. Sign me up! In fact\, I’ll have the pleasure of introducing the program: Ravel’s celebrated Piano Concerto in G major\, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47 (with all its attending historical lore)\, and Gabriela Ortiz‘s new orchestral work\, Si el oxígeno fuera verde (If oxygen were green)\, dedicated to the memory of her friend and fellow Mexican musician\, Jorge Verdín. \nIn fact\, dedications will be an anchoring theme for my talk\, which will also explore the historical contexts and styles of these three very different\, but compelling works.
