SUMMARY:Preconcert Presentation: The Music Guild / SummerFest 2026 (Susan Greenberg & Friends)
DESCRIPTION:This SummerFest concert from the Music Guild is subtitled “Virtuosity and Color\,” a tagline it certain merits! Flute and harp take the spotlight in this program led by flutist Susan Greenberg—a 36-year veteran of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and recording artist for more than 500 screen works. Greenberg is joined by violinist Maya Magub\, violist Carson Rick\, and harpist Cristina Montes Mateo. \nFavorites by Fauré\, Saint-Saëns\, and Ravel—long celebrated for their ingenious timbral colors—are paired with gorgeous compositions by Fiorillo\, Piazzola\, Rolla\, and Andrès. The preconcert program—and add-on ($15) for single-ticket purchasers\, but free for members—takes place one hour before the performance and includes with wine and hors d’oeuvres. I hope to see many of my fellow chamber-music lovers at the show! \nFounded with the vision of providing familiar and comforting entertainment to the influx of émigrés who arrived in Los Angeles after World War II\, the Music Guild is one of the oldest chamber music presenters in the greater Southern California area\, dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of our community through world-class performances and music educational programs.

SUMMARY:Preconcert Presentation: The Music Guild / SummerFest 2026 (Sords-Walz-Durkovic Trio)
DESCRIPTION:A new adventure! I am excited to kick-off the Music Guild’s 2026 SummerFest with a preconcert presentation on a wide-ranging program. The Sords-Walz-Durkovic Trio—violinist Andrew Sords\, longtime LA Opera principal cellist John Walz\, and pianist Timothy Durkovic—will present piano trios by Mozart and Mendelssohn as well as works by Brahms\, Handel\, and Massenet. A highlight in my book will be Louis Spohr’s arrangement of Schubert’s Erlkönig for baritone\, violin\, and piano\, featuring the fortuitously named Daniel Singer\, an accomplished bass-baritone and music director. \nThe preconcert program—and add-on ($15)  for single-ticket purchasers\, but free for members—takes place one hour before the performance and includes with wine and hors d’oeuvres. I hope to see many of my fellow chamber-music lovers at the show! \n Founded with the vision of providing familiar and comforting entertainment to the influx of émigrés who arrived in Los Angeles after World War II\, the Music Guild is one of the oldest chamber music presenters in the greater Southern California area\, dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of our community through world-class performances and music educational programs. \n

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Wagner’s “Die Walküre” (Act 3/ MAY 24)
DESCRIPTION:Continuing their exploration of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle—in semi-staged presentation—the LA Philharmonic presents the second opera of the massive tetralogy\, Die Walküre. Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and stage director Alberto Arvelo lead the production\, which features a set designed by the late Frank Gehry. Envisioned as a three-part saga—with each act presented individually—this production boasts a cast of international opera superstars\, including Ryan Speed Green as Wotan and Cristine Goerke as Brünnhilde. \nI’m thrilled to be introducing the heart-rending final act. My presentation will zoom out to consider Act 3 in context of the dramatic themes of Die Walküre and the Ring operas as a whole\, but will focus more closely on the relationship between father and daughter\, with a close musical exploration of Wagner’s use of leitmotiv technique in Wotan’s final goodbye to Brünnhilde.

SUMMARY:Le Salon de Musiques: Concert Intro and postconcert Q&A
DESCRIPTION:I’m looking forward to seeing my friends at Le Salon de Musiques in beautiful La Jolla\, where the musical feast will include Schubert’s always delightful  “Trout” Quintet. And\, true to the Salon spirit\, Artistic Director François Chouchan has spiced up the program with two surprising entrees: Hummel’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major and a Sonata for string quartet by Rossini! \nThe energetic Webern Quartet (violinists Benjamin Hoffman and Chiai Tajima\, violist Alex Granger\, and cellist Stella Cho) will be joined by Aaron Blick on double bass and pianist Chi-Jo Lee. \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! As musicological “co-host\,” I offer some introductory remarks on the program and moderate the post-concert Q&A with the artists\, champagne glass in hand!

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Tosca Opdam & Friends / Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Mason House season finale is upon us\, brightening up the May Gray of LA’s Westside! Dutch violinist Tosca Opdam has captivated audiences and critics alike with her luminously elegant performances and “gift for storytelling that surpasses mere virtuosity.” She also championed host Todd Mason’s  gorgeous Violin Concerto! For this concert\, Opdam is joined by an astounding group of powerhouse musicians:  violinist Asi Matathias\, violist Carson Rick\, cellist Cécilia Tsan\, and pianist Alin Melik-Adamyan. \nI will be offering a short introduction to the night’s program: Moszkowski Suite for 2 violins and piano\, Brahms’s String Quintet No. 2\, and Dvořák’s masterful Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major. \nThe dinner buffet (free with ticket) starts at 5:30pm; the brief pre-concert talk and concert begin at 6pm! \n

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Alexandre Kantorow
DESCRIPTION:Alexandre Kantorow makes his LA Jolla Music Society debut! In addition to winning the Gold Medal at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition\, Kantorow also received the rarely awarded Grand Prix—a double feat accomplished by only one other pianist\, Daniil Trifonov\, in 2009. The wide-ranging program features classics by Beethoven\, Liszt\, Scriabin\, and Chopin\, but also includes less well-known works by Medtner and Alkan. \nMy lecture will focus on the connections between these composers and each other\, as well as to the larger musical-tradition to which they all belong. \n

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Messaien’s “Turangalîla-Symphonie”
DESCRIPTION:One of the most fascinating works of the orchestral repertoire\, the Turangalîla-Symphonie makes relatively rare appearances on concert stages: an 80-minute musical feast that demands numerous extra hands in the orchestra and extra stamina in general. Among its sonorous innovations is the inclusion of the ondes-martenot\, an electronic instrument first introduced in the late 1920s. \nMy presentation will focus on orienting listener to the layout of this musical world\, touching on sonic landmarks such as the 4 “cyclic themes\,” the sounds of birds\, the nods to Stravinsky\, and the overall theme of Love. Depending on the performance date\, I will also have the pleasure of interviewing acclaimed ondist Cynthia Millar and conductor Simone Young.

SUMMARY:Preconcert Lecture: Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic presents Santa Diego Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Heading back to the (almost) springtime desert\, this time to introduce an all-Brahms program by the San Diego Symphony with music director Rafael Payare! The orchestra is partnering with violinist Leonidas Kavakos for Brahms’s smokin’ Violin Concerto in D Major and closing the program with Symphony No. 3. \nI will explore a major connection between these two works: titanic violinist Joseph Joachim\, one of Brahms’s oldest musical friends. Joachim advised Brahms on the concerto and played the premiere. And Symphony No. 3 pays homage to Joachim in a cheeky way\, rethinking a musical motive once associated with the violinist.

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Webern Quartet/ Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:The old and the new will come together brilliantly in this presentation by Mason Home Concerts\, featuring the top-notch musicians of the Webern Quartet (“Impassioned\, whimsical\, savage”—Alex Ross\, The New Yorker). This concert offers two major works: Todd Mason’s newest addition to his amazing group of string quartets and Beethoven’s mammoth String Quartet No. 130 with the Grosse Fuge. \nAs always\, I will set the mood with an introductory glimpse into these works. The Mason Concerts are a rare opportunity for a true salon experience: a small\, acoustically friendly venue with food and drink as part of the ticket price!

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Dudamel leads Beethoven and Ortiz (Mar 1)
DESCRIPTION:This is a dream program for me: Dudamel conducting Beethoven’s expansive Symphony No. 7—that sublime second movement—and the fully choreographed version of Gabriela Ortiz‘s emotionally riveting Revolución diamantina (Glitter Revolution\, an LA Philharmonic commission). The performance comes on the heels of a double-triumph by Ortiz\, Dudamel\, and the LA Phil at this month’s GRAMMY® awards: they were awarded the Best Classical Compendium for Yanga and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Dzonot.  \nRevolución diamantina dramatizes the feminist “Glitter Revolution” in Ortiz’s native Mexico\, a feminist protest movement in Mexico City against rampant gender-based violence\, police brutality\, and systemic impunity. The movement began in August 2019 after protesters showered the city’s police chief with pink glitter to demand justice for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl by officers. I was able to interview Ortiz when the work was first premiered by the LA Phil in a concert version. Ortiz’s vision was always for a ballet version\, so this concert will be especially thrilling—the full realization of the composer. The Brazilian dance company\, Grupo Corpo\, will provide the movement magic\, while the Los Angeles Master Chorale brings powerful vocals to the presentation. \nI’ll also talk about Beethoven\, of course\, including why so many people see the Seventh Symphony as a celebration of dance.

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Dudamel leads Beethoven and Ortiz(Feb 28)

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Chalifour and Friends / Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:Illness kept me away from the season opener of the wonderful Mason Home Concerts\, a very special series of chamber-music concerts held in a home “salon” on the beautiful Westside. So I am extra excited for the second concert—”Chalifour and Friends”—featuring violinist and longtime concertmaster of the LA Phil\, Martin Chalifour together with local music stars Ambroise Aubrun (violin)\, Jonah Sirota (viola)\, Cecilia Tsan (cello)\, and David Kaplan (piano). \nI will be offering a short introduction to the night’s program\, which includes Debussy’s Cello Sonata\, two Kreisler works for violin & piano\, and the first movement of Todd Mason’s String Quartet No. 1. But the big lift for the evening will be Brahms’s monumental Piano Quintet! YUM. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Preconcert Lecture: Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic presents Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Sure\, it’s a drive from Los Angeles to the Coachella Valley\, but the enthusiastic community of lovers and the star-level concerts presented by the Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic are worth it! I have the pleasure of introducing what promises to be an astounding performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and their Music Director Emeritus for Life\, Riccardo Muti. The program—Brahms Symphony No. 4\, Stravinsky’s Divertimento from Le baiser de la fée\, and Ravel’s Bolero—is made for showing off orchestral color and pleasing audiences. \nMy preconcert lecture will look at how composers borrow ideas and elements from the past and sources outside their immediate cultural context.

DESCRIPTION:Opening my holiday season with a happy return to Le Salon de Musiques! We have a powerhouse quartet of musicians for this special concert: violinists Martin Chalifour and Ray Ushikubo\, violist Carson Rick\, and cellist Allan Hong will present works Mozart\, Schumann\, and Howells. \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! SUMMARY:Preconcert Lecture: Philharmonic Society of Orange County
DESCRIPTION:What a terrific concert! The London-based Philharmonia Orchestra\, with principal conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali\, will be joined by pianist Víkingur Ólafsson\, known for his extraordinary technical precision and brainy artistry. Sign me up! In fact\, I’ll have the pleasure of introducing the program: Ravel’s celebrated Piano Concerto in G major\, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47 (with all its attending historical lore)\, and Gabriela Ortiz‘s new orchestral work\, Si el oxígeno fuera verde (If oxygen were green)\, dedicated to the memory of her friend and fellow Mexican musician\, Jorge Verdín. \nIn fact\, dedications will be an anchoring theme for my talk\, which will also explore the historical contexts and styles of these three very different\, but compelling works.

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Vienness Piano Duo / Preconcert Talk (and Performance!)
DESCRIPTION:We’re BAAAAACK! By popular demand\, the Vieness Piano Duo—Eva Schaumkell and Vijay Venkatesh—and I will collaborate again on Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals with Ogden Nash’s cheeky narration. (Note: I will be updating a few of the verses for shameless laughs.) \nBut that’s just the finale! The Vieness Duo will offer plenty of amazing piano artistry in a program that spotlights works by Spanish and Latin American composers including Granados\, Piazzolla\, and Lecuona. \nA special plus of all Mason Concerts: Edith’s amazing soups\, chilis and curry chicken salad along with desserts and plenty of wine!

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Zelter Quartet / Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:Ok\, so I’ve been fan crushin’ on the Zelter Quartet for a while now\, so it’s always a joy to introduce their concerts and hear them play! Their enticing program combines Schubert’s incomparable “Death and the Maiden” Quartet with two newer works: Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor (1935) and Todd Mason’s freshly minted String Quartet No. 4 “City of Angels” (2025). \nMy introduction will familiarize listeners with the historical context and musical elements of the Schubert and Price quartets; a quick conversation with host Todd Mason will offer a perfect launch point for the concert! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Lucas Debargue
DESCRIPTION:The composer-pianist Lucas Debargue comes to La Jolla with his sharp creative intellect and astounding technical gifts. Born in 1990\, Debargue forged a highly unconventional path to success. Having discovered classical music at the age of 10\, the future musician began to feed his passion and curiosity with diverse artistic and intellectual experiences\, which included advanced studies of literature and philosophy. The encounter with the celebrated piano teacher Rena Shereshevskaya proved a turning point: her vision and guidance inspired Debarge to make a life-long professional commitment to music. At age 25\, he broke into the highest echelon of classical piano\, winning the coveted Prize of the Moscow Music Critics’ Association at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 2015. \nDebargue’s program tonight includes works by Scriabin\, Ravel\, and Fauré—as well as his own compositions—inspires me to look at the connection that all of these composers had with the musical culture of Paris; my presentation is titled “À la parisienne.”

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Mozart and Schumann / Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:This is a very special Mason Concert\, bringing together five outstanding chamber musicians in a presentation of two repertoire faves: Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G Minor and Schumann’s luscious Piano Quintet. The brilliant line up? Kyle Gilner (violin)\, Chloé Tardif (violin)\, Luke Maurer (viola)\, Cécilia Tsan (cello)\, and Timothy Durkovic (piano). The evening also includes a newer work\, the deeply personal L’étreinte de l’amour by Todd Mason. \nMy introduction will offer a user-friendly overview to some of the movements of the two larger works and will include a short interview with Todd Mason about his composition.

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live Lecture @ LA Phil: Mahler’s Symphony 7 (Mar 1)
DESCRIPTION:Part of the LA Phil’s “Mahler Grooves Festival\,” this program features my favorite Mahler symphony: No. 7 in E minor\, frequently labeled “Song of the Night” for its many nocturnal evocations. My preconcert lecture will focus on the fascinating structure and programmatic suggestions of this expansive work\, as well as Mahler’s always inventive use of the orchestra. \nThe concert promises to be extraodinary\, led by Maestro Gustavo Dudamel\, who describes Mahler’s Seventh as “a symphony of everything: from chaos to glory\, sarcasm to tenderness\, from a funeral march to a seductive tango. It is a cosmic symphony of perfect construction and galactic emotional scope.”
