SUMMARY:Moderator / LA Phil: Invited Rehearsals
DESCRIPTION:The Invited Rehearsal provides young musicians and their instructors with a rare glimpse of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as the orchestra prepares for a concert. As part of the experience\, these student musicians will gain first-hand insight into the rehearsal process\, information on the repertoire and composers\, and the chance to take part in a dynamic and interactive workshop. \nI have the honor to act as a moderator for these very special events\, conversing with young musicians and their teachers as well as hearing about their own experiences participating in a music ensemble.

SUMMARY:Narrating “Concerts for Fifth Grade” / Philharmonic Society of Orange County
DESCRIPTION:I’m ready to do some musical storytelling with the Orange County Youth Symphony led by Music Director Johannes Müller Stosch! One of my favorite performance collaborations are the joyous “Concerts for Fifth Grade\,” presented by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. We have an exciting ocean-adventure tale for our enthusiastic youngsters\, with the orchestra acting as the fiercely talented crew. The concerts also spotlight several OCYS musicians in the role of conductor! The musical program includes works by Beethoven\, Tchaikovsky\, and Korngold—as well a special “Golden” finale!

SUMMARY:Narrator: Free Family Concert / Orange County Youth Symphony
DESCRIPTION:This free concert is fantastic extension of my narrator duties with the  Orange County Youth Symphony (led by Music Director Johannes Müller Stosch) and graciously sponsored by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. The venue is perfect for a more intimate engagement with excited youngsters and their people. I literally never get tired of the magic that happens in these kinds of concerts: children help us feel the joy. \nThe program and presentation are similar to the PSOC’s “Concerts for Fifth Grade”: this time an exciting ocean-adventure tale for our enthusiastic youngsters\, with the orchestra acting as the fiercely talented crew. The concerts also spotlight several OCYS musicians in the role of conductor! The musical program includes works by Beethoven\, Tchaikovsky\, and Korngold—as well a special “Golden” finale!

SUMMARY:Host/Narrator: LA Phil's Symphonies for Youth concert
DESCRIPTION:Bringing my modern Ms. Frizzle energy to Walt Disney Concert Hall\, I will narrate the Phil’s wonderfully engaging program for young people and their families and friends. This Symphony for Youth program will highlight the woodwind section as well as the musical concepts of melody and pitch. Works include Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story\, Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony\, Gershwin’s  Rhapsody in Blue\, Still’s
“Afro-American” Symphony\, Stravinsky’s Petrushka\, and Riley’s In C. \nI’m delighted to be collaborating again with script writer Callan Milani\, who knows how to bring lessons to life. The performance will feature Dudamel Fellow Kinga Głowacka on the podium. Hope to see you there! \nPhoto credit: Paul Cressey

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Philharmonic: “Invited Rehearsal” Lecturer
DESCRIPTION:Another great opportunity to work with young musicians and talk with them about music history! The LA Phil’s Invited Rehearsal program is open to school or extra-curricular instrumental music ensembles—jazz\, wind ensemble\, orchestra\, chamber ensembles\, etc.—with players in middle and/or high school (grades 6-12). Students learn a little background about the works they will hear rehearsed live in Disney Hall. For this session\, students will be sitting in on the rehearsal of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor with soloist Yeol Eum Son and conductor Ryan Bancroft. \nFor this presentation\, I will help students understand more about Mozart’s experiences as a keyboardist—including a look at the fortepiano— and how his concertos combine orchestra and soloist in exciting ways.

SUMMARY:Host/Narrator: LA Phil / Symphonies for Youth (Mar 15)
DESCRIPTION:A new and very welcome adventure with the LA Phil: I’m hosting the Symphonies for Youth concerts! I come to this new collaboration with special joy\, not only because I remember bringing my youngest son to these concerts\, but also because I am collaborating with  music-education content creator Callan Milani\, a former student of mine at the Colburn Conservatory and a very dear friend. #WINNING \nThe program is going to be fantastic: works by Mozart\, Beethoven\, Vivaldi\, Piazzola\, and Montgomery will help young listeners and family members learn about musical structure and harmony!  The concert features Dudamel Conducting Fellow Dayner Tafur-Diaz and solo violinist Ray Ushikubo. \n  \n  \n  \n

And this time\, student will be able to watch Maestro Dudamel with his orchestra! \nFor this presentation\, I will be focusing on Mahler’s Seventh Symphony\, which offers plentiful examples of storytelling through orchestration\, harmonic color and melodic theme. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s free Invited Rehearsal program for music students is BACK! I had so much fun being a part of these special events before COVID hit\, and now I have the privilege of returning as a lecturer\, introducing works by Ravel and Saint-Saëns’ Third Symphony. SUMMARY:Lecture: Pasadena Conservatory of Music
DESCRIPTION:Master teacher and violinist Aimée Kreston has invited me again to bring a little music history to her marvelous “Chamber Music Intensive” at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. Her students—primarily middle-school and high-school string players—always bring an incredible amount of curiosity and energy to my lecture. It’s an amazing program\, and I look forward to speaking about foundational works\, including Brahms’s Sextet and Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 77\, No. 1. We will also investigate what we mean by the “Classical” period and how sonata form works.

DESCRIPTION:The Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents their Concerts for Fifth Grade\, starring the Orange County Youth Symphony led by Music Director Johannes Müller Stosch. And moi? I have the happiest job of all: narrating the program and interacting directly with a concert-hall full of enthusiastic youngsters. For this presentation\, we will explore music through the lens of a hero’s journey\, thinking about what it means to become “heroic” and how every hero needs support and friendship. \nThe program includes works by Copland\, Prokofiev\, Elgar\, and Weber as well as a special (musical) appearance by the Avengers!

SUMMARY:Concert for Fifth Grade / OC Phil Society
DESCRIPTION:Fifth grade is a tough sell for classical music. But I’m thrilled to return to one of my favorite gigs: narrating an Orange County Youth Symphony concert for local 5th graders. The show’s theme? Resilience and working towards goals\, as illustrated by the lives and music of Beethoven\, Holst\, and John Williams. I applaud the Orange County Philharmonic Society’s fun\, innovative approach. \nPlease note: tickets to this concert are not available to the general public.

SUMMARY:Zoom Class / Violin Bootcamp + Music History
DESCRIPTION:As many of you know\, Colburn has a Community School whose mission is training the next generation of musicians and patrons. This summer I have the pleasure of teaching in the Violin Bootcamp program for the first time\, thanks to an invitation from my colleague Aimee Kreston. I appreciate the invitation and Aimee’s mission: to provide her students more context for what they’re learning\, enriching them both culturally and technically.
