SUMMARY:Invited Lecturer: Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival (July 22)
DESCRIPTION:My first time being part of the Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival\, which is a real treat. I love the city and can’t wait to meet the lovely community at SCMS! \nMy presentation for their new lecture series will be on Rebecca Clarke\, particularly on her earlier life leading up to the composition of Morpheus for piano and violin—a work she originally premiered under the pseudonym Anthony Trent. Clarke’s resolve to work professionally in music and her impressive body of work is an inspiration for all. I am fortunate to have access to a number of documents\, including her memoir\, thanks to Christopher Johnson\, Clarke’s great-nephew-by-marriage who owns Clarke’s rights and worked with her during her final decade and catalogued her compositions\, with her assistance. \nI will be giving this lecture on July 21-22 in two venues—the Seattle Chamber Music Society Center and Seattle Women’s University Club—and as a Zoom webinar.

SUMMARY:Opera League of Los Angeles: Seminar on Mozart's "Così fan tutte"
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of the upcoming Los Angeles production of Mozart’s comic opera Così fan tutte\, my presentation for the marvelous Opera League of Los Angeles will interrogate the gender-determinist premise of the work’s title—women are like that—in the context of Enlightenment ideas of rationalist demonstration. Moreover\, I’ll explore how contemporary productions and audiences grapple with the challenges of this “school for lovers” and what different kinds of lessons might be drawn from the opera. \nAbout the Opera League of Los Angeles\nFounded in 1981\, the nonprofit Opera League of Los Angeles is the primary volunteer support organization\, and co-founder\, of LA Opera\, the resident opera company for the City of Los Angeles that was established in 1986. \nThe Opera League produces an array of educational programs including seminars\, gatherings\, musicales\, master classes\, and much more\, all with the common aim of expanding the appreciation of opera by bringing people together to celebrate this timeless art form.

SUMMARY:Opera League of Los Angeles: Seminar on "La Bohème\," "Tosca" and "Madama Butterfly" (Puccini100 celebration)
DESCRIPTION:I continue my seminar series with for the Opera League of Los Angeles celebrating the centennial of Puccini’s death. This second lecture looks at Puccini’s “triple crown” of popular works: La bohème\, Tosca\, and Madama Butterfly. I’ll focus mostly on Butterfly\, a repertoire staple that has an increasingly complicated reception history; the exoticism that worked for Puccini’s fin-de-siècle Italian audiences (and continues to be promoted on many stages) fires up reasonable resistance in today’s global world\, especially as regards imperialist attitudes\, racism\, and sex trafficking. \nMembership is required for registration. \n“The Opera League of Los Angeles produces an array of educational programs including seminars\, gatherings\, musicales\, master classes\, and much more\, all with the common aim of expanding the appreciation of opera by bringing people together to celebrate this timeless art form.” For information about Opera League activities\, membership\, and this event\, check out their web site\, linked above!

SUMMARY:Book presentation: "Understanding the Women of Mozart's Operas"
DESCRIPTION:The Barrington Area Library invited me to speak about my book\, Understanding the Women of Mozart’s Operas (Univ. of Calif. Press\, 2007\, 2021)\, a critical re-evaluating source materials as well as common reception assumptions about the female roles in the Da Ponte operas and The Magic Flute. The book’s feminist lens has attracted a growing audience of readers interested in the ethics of opera culture and production\, prompting a new paperback edition in 2021. \nThe event is free and virtual via Zoom. Register here. \nNote the time difference! The talk is slated for 7pm Central Time = 5pm Pacific Time.

SUMMARY:Lecture Presentation: Committee of Professional Women/LA Phil Association
DESCRIPTION:I’m honored to be the invited speaker at this gathering of the Committee of Professional Women\, affiliated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. This Affiliate group has member from across the greater Los Angeles area and focuses its philanthropical support on providing tickets for children in group homes to attend the LA Phil’s Symphonies for Youth. A very worthy endeavor! \nMy presentation—”Women in Western Classical Music History: Patrons\, Performers\, Pedagogues\, Creators\, and Conductors”—will explore the myriad ways that women have contributed to this musical tradition\, but also the roadblocks to access (training and opportunities) that women face right up to the present moment.

SUMMARY:Osher Lecture\, Bach’s Goldberg Variations: A Musical and Cinematic Exploration
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be an Invited Speaker at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego! And I’m revisiting one of my favorite topics: Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations. \nWhen Bach published the “Goldberg” Variations in 1741\, he could not have known that some two centuries later this famously demanding work for keyboard would ignite the musical world and claim a significant place in American popular culture of the latter twentieth century. This class will explore the fascinating structure and musical styles of the Goldbergs as well as its peculiar role in contemporary fiction and film. \nFor more information\, visit the course page or OSHER membership page. One week of free membership! The course is offered live and remotely via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Seminar Lecture: Santa Monica-Westside Philharmonic Committee
DESCRIPTION:I will be lecturing to the Santa Monica-Westside Philharmonic Committee\, and Affiliated Committee. My subject\, appropriately for members of this volunteer group that supports the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, is the history of the Western “classical” orchestra from the Greek roots of the term to the composer and organizations of the 18th century that helped to make symphonic works a mainstay of our programming today. \nFor more information about Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliated Groups\, visit their page here.

SUMMARY:Free LAO Zoom Class / Bel Canto Dramedy
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Topic – Bel Canto “Dramedy”: Mixed Musical Styles in Cenerentola\nBy the time he wrote Cenerentola\, Rossini had already mastered a wildly successful comic style and had proven his skill at serious opera as well. For Cenerentola\, Rossini mixed his musical styles more freely\, adding dimension to the characters and the overall story. During this session\, we will listen to examples of these different musical styles and how they enhance Rossini’s Cinderella story. \nAbout this 4-week course… \nReady to rethink what you know about opera history? SUMMARY:Free LAO Zoom Class / Musical Artist as Hero
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Topic – The Musical Artist as German Hero: Romanticism\, Myth\, and Wagner’s Tannhäuser\nThis week we will delve into the two medieval stories that Wagner combined for his libretto: the knight-poet seeking redemption after succumbing to Venus’s erotic pleasures and the famous singing contests held at Wartburg Castle. These two German-centric narratives also offered Wagner the perfect vehicle for celebrating the (super) power of the voice. \nAbout this 4-week course… \nReady to rethink what you know about opera history? SUMMARY:Free LAO Zoom Class / Rossini & Wagner
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Topic – A Tale of Two Opera Composers\nWe will explore the careers of Rossini and Wagner up to 1850 in the context of European opera cultures—French\, German\, and Italian—of that time. What musical ideals did they have in common and what were some of the factors behind their very different operatic styles? \nAbout this 4-week course… \nReady to rethink what you know about opera history?
