DESCRIPTION:Opening my holiday season with a happy return to Le Salon de Musiques! We have a powerhouse quartet of musicians for this special concert: violinists Martin Chalifour and Ray Ushikubo\, violist Carson Rick\, and cellist Allan Hong will present works Mozart\, Schumann\, and Howells. \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! SUMMARY:LA Phil: Mahler Grooves Listening Party / Moderator
DESCRIPTION:A once-in-a-lifetime events! I have the honor of moderating this listening party with three distinguished—and Mahler-loving—panelists: film director Todd Field (Tár)\, music supervisor Lauren Mikus (Only Murders in the Building)\, and composer-musician David Longstreth of the band Dirty Projectors. I worked together with the LA Phil hosts to shape a playlist based on the panelists’ favorite Mahler works and recordings; amazingly\, the LA Phil audio team tracked down original vinyl for almost all of these choices! Listener will have the pleasure of a true audiophile experience at the extravagant Paramour Estate. I look forward to a wonderful night of listening and discussion as we revel in Mahler’s recorded legacy and his influence on film scoring and new composition.

SUMMARY:Invited Panelist on Public Musicology: "Music in Dialogue" Conference at UCLA
DESCRIPTION:My life as a teacher and scholar has been wonderfully enriched over the past 2+ years as a Lecturer in Musicology at UCLA.  Case in point?  The “Music in Dialogue” Conference organized by the student editorial team of MUSE: An Undergraduate Music Studies Journal. The conference will spotlight work by graduating seniors and terminal masters students\, and will also include roundtable discussions by faculty and professionals offering insights and ideas for future professional development. That’s where I come in! I’m delighted to have been invited to participate in the closing roundtable discussion on public-facing musicology\, together with my colleague Matthew Vest (UCLA Research Librarian) and Holley Replogle-Wong (Program Director of the UCLA Center for Musical Humanities). \n  \n

Rounding out the offerings is a Piano Trio by Ignaz Lachner with the relatively unusual combination of violin\, viola\, and piano. \nAnd look at this crazy-talented lineup of artists! Benjamin Hoffman (violin)\, Kyle Gliner (violin)\, Carson Rick (viola)\, Allan Hon (cello)\, Ryan Baird (double bass)\, and Vijay Venkatesh (piano). \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! SUMMARY:Le Salon de Musiques: Concert Intro and postconcert Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Vive la France! The February Salon spotlights two French composers of the later Romantic era: Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré. My preconcert introduction will explore the importance of chamber music for these composers and the activities of the Societé Nationale de Musique (the National Society of Music)\, an organization in which both Fauré and Saint-Saëns were active and which aimed to promote French music. \nI’ll also offer a snapshot of the life of Reynaldo Hahn\, who was born in Venezuela but lived most of his life in Paris. A composer\, singer\, conductor\, and music critic\, Hahn studied with Charles Gouonod and Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatoire\, and took private composition lessons with Saint-Saëns. \nProgram: Hahn\, Venezia for tenor voice and piano; Saint-Saëns\, Piano Quartet No. 2 in B-flat major\, Op. 41; Fauré\, Elegie in C Minor\, Op. 24 for cello and piano and Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor\, Op. 15. \nArtists: Benjamin Hoffman (violin)\, Jonah Sirota (viola)\, Sarah Kim (cello)\, Xiao Chen (piano)\, and Jon Lee Keenan (tenor)

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live: Dudamel leads the LA Phil in “Das Rheingold”
DESCRIPTION:This special presentation of Wagner’s Das Rheingold celebrates architect Frank Gehry\, a dedicated friend to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and\, of course\, designer of the gorgeous Walt Disney Concert Hall. Gehry has crafted the scenic design for this Rheingold production. \nBefore each of the three performances\, I will be speaking with two members of the creative team: Alberto Arvelo (Director/Video Art Director) and Cori Ellison (Dramaturg). I’ll also offer some remarks on the musical style with audio examples to complement the opening discussion. A great way to ready the mind and spirit for this intense visual and musical experience. \nFrom the LA Phil website: “For the first time\, Dudamel helms a fully staged production of one part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle\, navigating the epic naturalism\, endless melodies\, and gripping harmonies. The mythical world of Das Rheingold springs forth from Walt Disney Concert Hall with the help of the ever-innovative Frank Gehry\, direction by Alberto Arvelo\, and costumes by Cindy Figueroa. The Grammy Award-winning Ryan Speedo Green lends his voice to Wotan\, headlining an internationally renowned cast.” \nAnd one of my favorite mezzo sopranos\, Raehann Bryce-Davis\, is appearing as Fricka!

SUMMARY:Upbeat Live: Dudamel Leads World Premiere of Ortiz's "Glitter Revolution"/ California Festival (Nov 19)
DESCRIPTION:Led by Gustavo Dudamel\, this concert is part of the statewide California Festival\, a statewide music showcase spotlighting the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years. \nThe program spotlights works by two Latin composers\, opening with Astor Piazzola’s tango-inflected The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires\, arranged orchestra and solo violin (Leticia Moreno). But the main event is a new ballet score by the composer Gabriela Ortiz\, co-curator of the Pan-American Music Initiative with Dudamel and the Phil. Like many of Ortiz’s works\, the ballet Revolución diamantina (“Glitter Revolution”) connects to critical real-world events\, in this case the feminine protest movement that erupted in Mexico in 2019 following the rape of a girl by police officers. \nAn LA-Phil commission\, Revolución diamantina receives its world premiere (concert version) with this 4-concert run. I will have the honor of speaking with Gabriela Ortiz about her first ballet score during the Upbeat Live preconcert conversation and lecture.

SUMMARY:LAO Podcast / Stravinsky's Oedipus
DESCRIPTION:In this Behind the Curtain conversation\, musicologist Dr. Kristi Brown Montesano and Dr. Arianne Helou\, a dramaturg and French studies scholar\, discuss “Oedipus Rex\,” composed by Igor Stravinsky to a libretto by Jean Cocteau based on the ancient Greek tragedy of the same name by Sophocles. The 1927 opera is a highly stylized\, ritualistic work set in the time of plague. \nOn Sunday\, June 6\, 2021\, LA Opera presented “Oedipus Rex” at in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. With a limited audience and safety protocols observed\, it was LA Opera’s first public\, indoor performance since March 2020. Music Director James Conlon conducted a stellar cast led by tenor Russell Thomas\, LA Opera’s Artist in Residence\, as Oedipus\, the doomed king. Mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges returned as Jocasta\, his queen (and mother). Legendary actor Stephen Fry will make his LA Opera debut (via audio recording) as the Narrator in this equally-legendary tale. \nA special online version of “Oedipus Rex” was released on June 17\, 2021 for home viewing. (Note: LA Opera performance is longer available for viewing.)

SUMMARY:LA Opera Blog / Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:For Women’s History Month this year\, the LA Opera’s community engagement theme is “Choose to Challenge.” I am honored to announce LA Opera invited me to this important discussion a guest contributor. This link will take you to the full article I wrote but here’s a preview of how I started the piece: \n“The theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is “Choose to Challenge\,” a reminder to everyone to “challenge inequality\, call out bias\, question stereotypes\, and help forge an inclusive world.” \nMany opera companies and artists have already begun the difficult but necessary work of reassessing the status quo\, pushing for diversity and positive representation in the repertoire as well as in creative personnel and leadership. But even today\, women are woefully underrepresented in key roles\, including composers\, stage directors\, conductors\, artistic directors\, and general directors.  \nConsider the nine opera companies in OPERA America’s “budget 1” tier: Dallas\, Houston\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Michigan\, Philadelphia\, San Francisco\, Santa Fe\, and Seattle. (With an annual budget of over $300\,000\,000\, the Metropolitan Opera occupies its own category.) Among these companies\, only Seattle has a female general manager\, Christina Scheppelmann\, appointed in 2019. The only female music director among these companies\, Eun Sun Kim\, officially starts her tenure in San Francisco this year. \nOnstage\, of course\, there are plenty of female-identifying vocalists and dancers\, but the statistics for composers\, conductors\, and stage directors are pretty disheartening. During the 2018/19 season—the last full season before Covid-19 closed houses—the nine “budget 1” companies staged 63 works. Only two of these operas were by women: Ellen Reid’s Pulitzer-winning “prism” (premiering at LA Opera and co-produced by Beth Morrison Productions) and Rene Orth’s Empty the House (Opera Philadelphia). The numbers are only a little better for conductors; women led the music of seven productions (11%). Stage direction is more encouraging\, with women directing 17 productions (27%). \nHistorically\, the culture of Western classical music has traded heavily in traditional ideas of (white) male genius\, and—as the above statistics show—this patriarchal legacy still resonates strongly in today’s opera world. And\, yet\, there are also hundreds of women pushing back these old-school systems\, bringing fierce creative energy and new vision to the world of opera. We wanted to spotlight at least a few of these amazing women who are “choosing to challenge” the world of opera and beyond…” (Read more to learn about three important women in opera the article highlights.)
