SUMMARY:Host/Narrator: LA Phil's Symphonies for Youth concert
DESCRIPTION:Bringing my modern Ms. Frizzle energy to Walt Disney Concert Hall\, I will narrate the Phil’s wonderfully engaging program for young people and their families and friends. This Symphony for Youth program will highlight the woodwind section as well as the musical concepts of melody and pitch. Works include Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story\, Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony\, Gershwin’s  Rhapsody in Blue\, Still’s
“Afro-American” Symphony\, Stravinsky’s Petrushka\, and Riley’s In C. \nI’m delighted to be collaborating again with script writer Callan Milani\, who knows how to bring lessons to life. The performance will feature Dudamel Fellow Kinga Głowacka on the podium. Hope to see you there! \nPhoto credit: Paul Cressey

SUMMARY:Invited Lecturer: Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival (July 21)
DESCRIPTION:My first time being part of the Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival\, which is a real treat. I love the city and can’t wait to meet the lovely community at SCMS! \nMy presentation for their new lecture series will be on Rebecca Clarke\, particularly on her earlier life leading up to the composition of Morpheus for piano and violin—a work she originally premiered under the pseudonym Anthony Trent. Clarke’s resolve to work professionally in music and her impressive body of work is an inspiration for all. I am fortunate to have access to a number of documents\, including her memoir\, thanks to Christopher Johnson\, Clarke’s great-nephew-by-marriage who owns Clarke’s rights and worked with her during her final decade and catalogued her compositions\, with her assistance. \nI will be giving this lecture on July 21-22 in two venues—the Seattle Chamber Music Society Center and Seattle Women’s University Club—and as a Zoom webinar. \n

SUMMARY:Narrating “Concerts for Fifth Grade” / Philharmonic Society of Orange County
DESCRIPTION:The Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents their Concerts for Fifth Grade\, starring the Orange County Youth Symphony led by Music Director Johannes Müller Stosch. And I have the honor and pleasure of narrating the program and interacting directly with a concert-hall full of enthusiastic youngsters. (They literally clap wildly for everything!) For this presentation\, we will take our listeners through a journey from morning to night and back again with a wonderful program of excerpts evoking various times of our daily lives. \nThe program includes works by Dvořák\, Armstrong Gibbs\, Korngold\, Brahms\, as well as favorite tunes from Aladdin and The Pirates of the Caribbean.

SUMMARY:Mason Concert
DESCRIPTION:What’s better than ONE fabulous pianist? Why\, TWO fabulous pianists\, of course! Mason Home Concerts welcomes the exuberant Vieness Piano Duo—wife and husband\, Eva Schaumkell and Vijay Venkatesh—in a “beast” of a program\, featuring the Bach-Busoni Chaconne in D Minor\, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite\, some of Rachmaninoff’s Moments-Musicaux\, and (drum roll) Saint-Saëns The Carnival of the Animals. I am especially excited about this last selection\, because the Vieness Duo has asked me to do the narration. My preconcert introduction will explore the special idiom of “piano four hands\,” and also offer some insight into the individual works. \nThe Mason Concerts are a Westside gem: intimate\, well-planned\, and with great food and wine. Tickets often sell out quickly\, so buy soon!

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laguna Beach Live! and the Philharmonic Society of Orange County\, the evening is an exciting introduction for the 2024 Laguna Beach Music Festival which will feature esteemed violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. \nI will be acting as musicological co-host with violinist Madalyn Parnas Möller and cellist Erin Breene for this recital-conversation exploring “contemporary classical.” \nThe musical program includes compositions by Andrew Norman\, William Bolcom\, and Lera Auerbach\, thoughtfully paired with older works for a fascinating\, cross-century musical dialogue. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mason Concerts
DESCRIPTION:Looking forward to introducing the program of another sold-out Mason House Concert! The program spotlights the flute (aka Lizzo’s favorite instrument) and more specifically the astounding talent of 15-year-old flutist-composer Nikka Gershman\, a National YoungArts Winner and the “youngest musician in the history of the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition to win the Grand Prize for Exceptional Talent and Musicianship Award over all categories.” The eclectic and challenging program—with masterful accompanist Vivian Fan on the piano—spans three centuries: a full evening of magical flute music.  (Pun fully intended.) \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of the year again! The Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents their Concerts for Fifth Grade\, starring the Orange County Youth Symphony led by Music Director Johannes Müller Stosch. And moi? I have the happiest job of all: narrating the program and interacting directly with a concert-hall full of enthusiastic youngsters. SUMMARY:UpBeat Live / Fidelio with Deaf West Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Fidelio—Beethoven’s only opera—continues to lend itself to dramatic innovation. Join me for Upbeat Live\, where we review Fidelio’s history and prepare this new semi-staged collaboration between the LA Phil’s and Deaf West Theatre. Hearing vocalists sing while Deaf actors use the gestural poetry of sign language to explore communication—both primal and sublime—at the heart of all artistic expression.

SUMMARY:Pre-Concert Lecture / Lang Lang's Goldberg
DESCRIPTION:Lang Lang and the Goldberg Variations. Always the same\, always different. The essence of Bach’s Goldberg Variations turns on this fundamental tension: a perpetual bass line connecting the initial aria melody with 30 astonishingly inventive variations. While surveying the fascinating architecture of this work\, my pre-concert lecture will also consider how the Goldberg Variations played a crucial role in popularizing Bach during the twentieth century. A thrilling program presented by La Jolla Music Society. \n“I’ve been studying this work for more than 20 years\, and recording it has been a lifelong dream.” — Lang Lang

SUMMARY:Pre-Concert Lecture / La Jolla Music Society
DESCRIPTION:Beatrice Rana\, known for ferocious technique and musical intelligence\, presents a program on laughter and lessons from the “City of Lights.” In her delightful La Jolla Music Society program\, Rana explores the city where Chopin\, Debussy\, and Stravinsky all lived\, loved\, and created. My pre-concert lecture considers how Paris offered the perfect milieu for these composers and works: The idiosyncratic humor of Chopin’s Scherzos. The serious business of Debussy’s formidable Études. And the Russian traditions and modernist innovations of Stravinsky’s Petrushka.

SUMMARY:LA Phil / Salonen\, Strauss + 2 Premieres
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano for UpBeat Live to explore this Esa-Pekka Salonen-led program featuring two exciting premieres. \nSalonen’s own Fog (a tribute to Frank Gehry) takes as inspiration the Bach E major Prelude from Partita in E (BWV 1006)\, which was the first piece of music Salonen and Gehry heard in the Walt Disney Concert Hall while it was still under construction. Much of the of the harmony is based on Gehry’s first name: F A G E H (B natural in English). \nAnd Gabriella Smith’s new organ concerto Breathing Forests. As a composer and environmentalist\, Smith explores the complex relationship between humans\, forests\, climate change\, and fire—with the wood and power of the organ invoking the grandeur of the forest. \nThen buckle up for Strauss’ whirlwind of a symphonic poem\, well known for its use in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
