SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: "Akhnaten" (LA Opera virtual public seminar)
DESCRIPTION:My kickoff lecture for this terrific FREE series of public lectures from LA Opera Connects will look into the musical idiom commonly labeled “minimalism” and more specifically Philip Glass’s Ahknaten\, the third opera in this “Portrait Trilogy”—operas about people that shifted the course of history. While the first two of these operas—Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha—center on 20th-century figures (Einstein and Gandhi\, respectively)\, Akhnaten takes us back Ancient Egypt\, but with a sensibility that still rings as contemporary. \nThe “Exploring Opera” seminars also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: "La Bohème" (LA Opera virtual seminar)
DESCRIPTION:What fun to share insights about Puccini’s most popular opera as part of Los Angeles Opera’s “Exploring Opera” virtual seminars\, open to all opera lovers! My presentation will focus on the winning formula—the exciting stylistic elements in both the libretto and the score— cooked up by Puccini and his collaborators\, Luigi Illica & Giuseppe Giacosa. Kinetic ensembles\, realistic dialogue\, “songs” in the story world of the opera\, and of course those marvelous Puccini melodies are just some of the elements we will explore. \nThe “Exploring Opera” seminars also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Mozart's Così fan tutte
DESCRIPTION:So excited to be in my special wheelhouse for this seminar: Mozart opera! My presentation will focus on the gender politics behind this comic opera with its problematic accusation that “women are like that\,” meaning not trustworthy in matters of love. The LAO production\, directed by the fabulous Shawna Lucey\, brilliant meets the challenge of this work. \nThe “Opera for Educators” program—an initiative of LA Opera Connects—offers half-day seminars on Zoom\, each of which explores one of the main-stage works of the current season. An array of scholars\, educators\, and artists come together to enrich participants’ appreciation and understanding of historic and contemporary opera. \nLAUSD teachers are able to get professional-development credit\, but all opera lovers are welcome to join the seminars!

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators/LA Opera Connects: Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette"
DESCRIPTION:Ever notice that French-language opera doesn’t get the same time in the programming spotlight as Italian-language opera? No fair! I will dive into the rich history of French opera and focus especially on the cultural\, aesthetic\, and musical world of French grand opera in the 19th century—a repertoire that had a strong influence on both Verdi\, Wagner\, and of course Charles Gounod. \nOther presenters include musicologist Dr. Tiffany Kuo (Gounod and Music Culture in the French Second Empire)\, dramaturg Dr. Miranda Johnson-Haddad (The Shakespearean Story Behind Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette)\, LA Opera Chorus Director Jeremy Frank (The Music of Roméo et Juliette) and educator Susan Convirs (Lessons and Resources). \nThe “Opera for Educators” program—an initiative of LA Opera Connects—offers half-day seminars on Zoom\, each of which explores one of the main-stage works of the current season. SUMMARY:Opera League of Los Angeles: Seminar on Puccini's "Il trittico" (Puccini100 celebration)
DESCRIPTION:Honoring the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s death\, this lecture series for the Opera League of Los Angeles offers in-depth explorations of the historical and musical context for Puccini’s art works. This lecture considers the rise of Italian nationalism as well as the artistic challenges of Puccini’s Il trittico:  an innovative “triptych” of three one-act operas. We will look at the gritty realism of Il tabarro\, the hyper Romantic nostalgia of Suor Angelica\, and the satire of Gianni Schicchi.  \nThis Puccini100 lecture series is a special event for members. \n

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Madama Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:My introductory lecture for this particular seminar sets up a day of exploration and critique critique Puccini’s Madama Butterfly—of one of the most popular\, and also thematically challenging\, works of the operatic canon. I will look at the historical background of the opera\, including contemporary events that may have affected the infamously bad reception of the premiere\, and also the colonialist/racially biased language and depictions of the opera’s sources and the libretto itself. Other presenters include Dr. Mariko Takahashi (CSU Fullerton\, History)\, Dr. Rebecca Corbett (USC\, East Asian Library)\, and koto performer Yuki Yasuda. \nFor the Opera for Educators seminars\, Los Angeles Opera Connects brings together experts in music\, history\, languages\, and more to lead participants on a scholarly exploration of the current Los Angeles Opera main-stage season—streaming live through Zoom to wherever you are. All are welcome to join and learn more about opera\, and teachers get an extra bonus by earning LAUSD Salary Points.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Opera Overview
DESCRIPTION:The kick-off seminar for LAUSD teachers and other opera-curious people! We open with an overview of the art form\, and my talk will look at the three “pillars” of opera—the music\, dramatic text (libretto)\, and stage production. In this brief introduction\, we will explore the musical styles and dramatic themes from the earliest canonic opera\, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607) to Adams’ Dr. Atomic (2000). \nFor the Opera for Educators seminars\, Los Angeles Opera Connects brings together experts in music\, history\, languages\, and more to lead participants on a scholarly exploration of the current Los Angeles Opera main-stage season—streaming live through Zoom to wherever you are. SUMMARY:LA Opera: Opera in the Classroom Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Part of the LAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars\, this particular event aims to educate—and inspire—K-12 teachers about ways to incorporate opera into their lesson plans. My presentation\, “Fairy Tales\, Opera\, and the Art of Retelling\,” will consider how fairy tales narratives were transformed in two canonic works: Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Rossini’s Cinderella. I will also explore the ways in which these stories might resonate with today’s young people\, including critical issues such as food insecurity and parental abuse or neglect. \n“Opera for Educator” seminars are held via Zoom and provide an exciting opportunity for K-12 teachers to earn LAUSD salary points and UCLA extension credit. SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Verdi's "La traviata"
DESCRIPTION:In this “Opera for Educators” seminar—offered by LA Opera Connects—I’ll be talking about the role of production in creating new meanings of older works such as La traviata\, Verdi’s most enduringly popular opera. LA Opera is presenting the work in a new production by director Shawna Lucey\, who takes an explicitly feminist approach\, grounding her interpretation in the historical realities of the French courtesan Marie Duplessis\, who inspired the character of Violetta. \nOther presenters will look explore the sources for La traviata‘s narrative\, the world of courtesans in mid-19th-century Paris\, and contemporary film adaptations such as Moulin Rouge and Pretty Woman. \nLAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars are held via Zoom and provide an exciting opportunity for K-12 teachers to earn LAUSD salary points and UCLA extension credit. SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: Zemlinsky's "The Dwarf" and Still's "Highway 1\, USA"
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Opera presents a double feature of neglected one-act operas : Alexander Zemlinsky‘s Der Zwerg (The Dwarf\, 1922) and William Grant Still‘s Highway 1\, USA\, which was first completed in 1946\, but had to wait nearly two decades for its premiere. My introductory talk for teachers and opera lovers will contextualize the works in the cultural worlds of the composers (both of whom suffered from virulent—even murderous—racism) and touch on the   experiences and aesthetic ideals that influences their musical styles. \nThe LAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars are held via Zoom and welcome both teachers (with the opportunity for professional development credits) and non-teachers: the only pre-requisite is a curiosity about opera!  Register on the Opera for Educator’s webpage. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
DESCRIPTION:My contribution to this Los Angeles Opera Connects seminar for K-12 educators and opera lovers will be an exploration of composer Gabriela Lena Frank and her relationship to Hispanic and Latin American culture\, history\, and language as well as her orchestral “palette\,” the ways in which she paints with orchestral timbres. \nFrank’s story as a creative musical artist is also shaped by her low-profound hearing loss\, which occurred when she was very young. Her understanding and experience of sound is layered and nuanced through this lived reality. \nMy talk will look at excerpts from Frank’s Apu (2017\, an orchestral tone poem) and Contested Eden (2021)\, written in the aftermath of the horrific 2020 wild fires that terrorized Californian already living on edge during the COVID-19 lockdowns. \nFrank’s first opera El Último Sueno de Frida y Diego will have its Los Angeles Opera premiere beginning Nov. 18 through Dec. 9. \nFor ticket information visit the Los Angeles Opera page.

SUMMARY:Opera for Educators / Otello
DESCRIPTION:As part of this seminar for local educators and operas lovers\, I will  speak about the historical context for Verdi’s final dramatic opera\, Otello (1887)\, which the composer completed after a 16-year self-imposed withdrawal from opera composition. We will explore Verdi’s extraordinary gift for vocal characterization and nuance\, particularly in the roles of Desdemona and Iago who represent the moral poles of the narrative. \nThe powerhouse cast is led by LA Opera Artist in Residence Russell Thomas in the title role\, Rachel Willis-Sørensen in her company debut as the doomed Desdemona\, and Igor Golovatenko as the sadistic Iago\, whose sadistic plotting drives the narrative to its tragic final scene.
