SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Alexandre Kantorow
DESCRIPTION:Alexandre Kantorow makes his LA Jolla Music Society debut! In addition to winning the Gold Medal at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition\, Kantorow also received the rarely awarded Grand Prix—a double feat accomplished by only one other pianist\, Daniil Trifonov\, in 2009. The wide-ranging program features classics by Beethoven\, Liszt\, Scriabin\, and Chopin\, but also includes less well-known works by Medtner and Alkan. \nMy lecture will focus on the connections between these composers and each other\, as well as to the larger musical-tradition to which they all belong. \n

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Lucas Debargue
DESCRIPTION:The composer-pianist Lucas Debargue comes to La Jolla with his sharp creative intellect and astounding technical gifts. Born in 1990\, Debargue forged a highly unconventional path to success. Having discovered classical music at the age of 10\, the future musician began to feed his passion and curiosity with diverse artistic and intellectual experiences\, which included advanced studies of literature and philosophy. The encounter with the celebrated piano teacher Rena Shereshevskaya proved a turning point: her vision and guidance inspired Debarge to make a life-long professional commitment to music. At age 25\, he broke into the highest echelon of classical piano\, winning the coveted Prize of the Moscow Music Critics’ Association at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 2015. \nDebargue’s program tonight includes works by Scriabin\, Ravel\, and Fauré—as well as his own compositions—inspires me to look at the connection that all of these composers had with the musical culture of Paris; my presentation is titled “À la parisienne.”

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture / La Jolla Music Society
DESCRIPTION:Outstanding pianist and creative thinker\, Jeremy Denk comes to the La Jolla Music Society with a program celebrating women composers from the 19th to 21st centuries along with works by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. From the lush\, romantic sounds of Clara Schumann to the sprightly playfulness of Amy Beach\, this multi-prize-winning musician has crafted a memorable evening full of energy\, emotion\, and tenderness. \nJeremy Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists\, and also a New York Times bestselling author\, winner of both the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize\, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \nMy preconcert Prelude Lecture will focus on the women composers of the program\, particularly the cultural circumstances that both inspired and discouraged their creative work.

SUMMARY:La Jolla Music Society: Hélène Grimaud
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to continue my collaboration with the La Jolla Music Society\, offering the preconcert lectures for a stellar piano concert series. This season’s opening concert? The marvelous Hélène Grimaud in a program of classical music’s three Bs (with an assist from Busoni): the Bach/Busoni Chaconne in D Minor\, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 30\, and Brahms’s Three Intermezzi and Fantasies. \nIn addition to exploring how Busoni adapted Bach’s tremendous violin work for the piano\, I’ll consider the nature of late creativity\, as the works by Beethoven and Brahms were written in the final years of the composers’ respective lives.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: "Resilience" (La Jolla Music Society SummerFest 2024)
DESCRIPTION:Another wonderful concert at the SummerFest! The theme of resilience connects the works on this unusual program featuring Fanny Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D Minor\, Maio Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Guitar Quintet\, Erwin Schulhoff’s Divertissement for Oboe\, Clarinet\, Bassoon\, and Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6. \nArtists include the exciting Abeo Quartet\, violinist Tessa Lark\, and guitarist Sean Shibe. \nMy introductory lecture investigates the very different types of resilience manifested by these composers who faced cultures of bias and repression\, as well as untimely loss and death. \nThe lecture was recorded an may be found here.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Bruce Liu
DESCRIPTION:My final Prelude Lecture of LJMS season will introduced a sold-out concert! Pianist Bruce Liu\, first prize winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition 2021 in Warsaw\, makes his debut appearance at the La Jolla Music Society. His first album featuring the winning competition performances received international acclaim including the Critics’ choice\, Editor’s choice\, and “Best Classical Albums of 2021” from the Gramophone Magazine. \nLiu’s program will feature sonatas by Haydn\, Chopin\, and Prokofiev\, as well a variation set by Kapustin and an assortment of character pieces by Rameau. My lecture will look at sonata as a evolving\, yet “classical” genre\, and place both Kapustin and Rameau in the historical and musical contexts.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Yefim Bronfman
DESCRIPTION:Superstar pianist Yefim Bronfman presents a program that links in numerous ways with the city of Vienna: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in D Major\, Opus 10\, No. 3\,  Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A Minor\, D.784\, Opus 143\, and Schumann’s Arabeske in C Major\, Opus 18 and Faschingsschwank aus Wien\, Opus 26. He will also offer a tribute to his long friendship with Esa-Pekka Salonen\, playing the composer-conductor’s Sisar\, a work dedicated to Bronfman. \nMy prelude lecture will illuminate how these works connect with music-loving Vienna\, through the composers who lived in and visited that magical city. \n

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Lucas & Arthur Jussen
DESCRIPTION:Championing repertoire for two pianists\, brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen offer a challenging program showcasing the range of possibilities: Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major\, K. 448\, Schubert’s Fantasy in F Minor\, D. 940 for piano four hands\, an arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring for two pianos\, and Hanna Kulenty’s VAN… (2014)\, which allows for both options! \nMy preconcert talk will look at the history of these two “modalities” of writing music for two pianists and also consider the different genre types on the program: sonata\, fantasy\, piano transcription of an orchestral score\, and—in the case of VAN…—a comparatively shorter programmatic work commissioned for a state occasion. \nFrom the event web site: \nDutch brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen have conquered the classical music scene with personality\, charm\, and exciting programs showcasing the unbreakable bond of their duets\, whether on one piano or two. On their way to Carnegie Hall\, the dynamic and charismatic brothers make their California debuts and demonstrate why Pianist magazine called them “a photogenic pair of musical wizards.” \n“It is like driving a pair of BMWs\,” remarked conductor Michael Schønwandt after directing the Dutch brothers Lucas (29) and Arthur Jussen (26). Despite their young ages\, they have been part of the international concert world for years and are praised vigorously by both press and audience.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Seong-Jin Cho
DESCRIPTION:My preperformance talk will introduce the recital program of pianist Seong-Jin Cho\, an artist who is wowing crowds over the globe. This particular musical journey includes a delightful Haydn Sonata\, through Ravel’s little minuet built on Haydn’s name and his more celebrated Miroirs\, a melancholy side trip through Mozart’s Adagio and finally on to the behemoth of Liszt’s “Dante” Sonata. \nSoeng-Jin Cho was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won First Prize at the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw\, and his career has rapidly ascended since. Cho’s latest recording is his solo album\, The Handel Project\, released in February 2023\, and in August 2021\, he released Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Scherzi with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda for Deutsche Grammophon. \n

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Alice Sara Ott
DESCRIPTION:I will offer an immersive introduction to the musical works for this “multimedia reimagining of the piano recital.” Accompanied by a full-length video installation designed by architect Hakan Demirel\, this program “takes us on a virtual journey of musical reflection through the microcosm that is Echoes Of Life\, in its US premiere.” \nFrom the program: Echoes Of Life is Ott’s personal musical reflection on life\, built around Chopin’s Preludes op. 28 and interspersed with seven works by the likes of György Ligeti\, Nino Rota\, Chilly Gonzales\, Tōru Takemitsu\, Arvo Pärt\, Francesco Tristano and Ott herself. Her collaboration with Demirel results in an album-length digital video installation accompanying the recital\, taking the audience on their own virtual journey and creating a wholly original concert experience.

SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Igor Levit
DESCRIPTION:I’m heading back to the beautiful Conrad-Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla! I’ll be giving the Prelude lecture for this recital by one of my favorite pianists: Igor Levit! Not only do I admired Levit’s tremendous talent\, but also his ethics as an artist-citizen. This unusual recital program features piano arrangements of Brahms’s chorale preludes for organ and Wagner’s Prelude from Tristan und Isolde\, together with Liszt’s canonic Sonata in B Minor and a variation set by jazz pianist\, Fred Hersch. \nMy lecture will consider the hows and whys of musical transcription and variation how do creative minds reshape existing material into something new? The topic also connects with Liszt’s famous sonata\, which (along with the astounding technical challenges) features wonderfully imaginative thematic transformations. \nFrom Levit’s bio: “Described by The New York Times as one of the “most important artists of his generation\,” Igor Levit places his art in the context of social events and understands it as inseparably linked to them. In 2020\, Levit was named Musical America’s Recording Artist of the Year and nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the category “Best Classical Instrumental Solo.”

SUMMARY:SummerFest Finale / Nicholas McGegan
DESCRIPTION:The finale concert of SummerFest Music Director Inon Barnatan’s inaugural season celebrates the concerto grosso. Conductor and harpsichordist Nicholas McGegan leads the SummerFest Chamber Orchestra. Great masterworks pair in exciting ways with modern visions of the form. And it all ties back to Opening Night’s exploration of the deep connection of music across centuries. \nIn my pre-concert talk for the finale concert—(7pm)—we’ll explore the concerto grosso’s social history. It’s a charming string-centric genre that first arose in seventeenth-century Italy\, delighting audiences and inspiring some of the most celebrated Baroque composers. We will consider the special qualities of the Baroque concerto grosso. And explore how contemporary composers such as Zwilich and Norman have woven some of these elements into fascinating fusions of the musical “then” and “now.”

SUMMARY:La Jolla Music Society / Finckel & Han
DESCRIPTION:Prelude Pre-Concert Lecture @ 7pm (Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano).\nConcert @ 8pm\nDavid Finckel and Wu Han are recipients of the 2010 Musical America’s Musicians of the Year award\, one of the highest honors granted by the music industry. \nHe was a protégé of Mstislav Rostropovich; she\, a veteran of top-flight musical training grounds like Aspen and Marlboro. Critics have praised the boldness\, imagination\, and collaborative intimacy of their work—often trumpeting his laser-like focus and her innate spark. \nBut performing is merely a starting point for this irrepressible husband and wife team\, whose résumé includes the stewardship of important arts organizations like the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music@Menlo; a history of innovation in programming\, recording\, and outreach; and a commitment to fostering young talent. Along the way\, they have built audiences and shaped a new wave of players. To call them overachievers would be an understatement. \nProgram\nTo be announced. \n  \n
