SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Chalifour and Friends / Preconcert Talk
DESCRIPTION:Illness kept me away from the season opener of the wonderful Mason Home Concerts\, a very special series of chamber-music concerts held in a home “salon” on the beautiful Westside. So I am extra excited for the second concert—”Chalifour and Friends”—featuring violinist and longtime concertmaster of the LA Phil\, Martin Chalifour together with local music stars Ambroise Aubrun (violin)\, Jonah Sirota (viola)\, Cecilia Tsan (cello)\, and David Kaplan (piano). \nI will be offering a short introduction to the night’s program\, which includes Debussy’s Cello Sonata\, two Kreisler works for violin & piano\, and the first movement of Todd Mason’s String Quartet No. 1. But the big lift for the evening will be Brahms’s monumental Piano Quintet! YUM. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mason Concert: Vienness Piano Duo / Preconcert Talk (and Performance!)
DESCRIPTION:We’re BAAAAACK! By popular demand\, the Vieness Piano Duo—Eva Schaumkell and Vijay Venkatesh—and I will collaborate again on Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals with Ogden Nash’s cheeky narration. (Note: I will be updating a few of the verses for shameless laughs.) \nBut that’s just the finale! The Vieness Duo will offer plenty of amazing piano artistry in a program that spotlights works by Spanish and Latin American composers including Granados\, Piazzolla\, and Lecuona. \nA special plus of all Mason Concerts: Edith’s amazing soups\, chilis and curry chicken salad along with desserts and plenty of wine!

Artistic Director and founder François Chouchan has put together an evocative program anchored by Schubert’s beloved “Rosamund” Quartet. The other two works are and early string quartet by Max Bruch and the melancholy Molto Adagio Sempre Cantante Doloroso (Very slowly and always sung\, painfully) by Guillaume Lekeu\, a bright rising star in 19th century Paris who died after an illness when he was only 24. \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! SUMMARY:Prelude Lecture: La Jolla Music Society presents Bruce Liu
DESCRIPTION:My final Prelude Lecture of LJMS season will introduced a sold-out concert! Pianist Bruce Liu\, first prize winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition 2021 in Warsaw\, makes his debut appearance at the La Jolla Music Society. His first album featuring the winning competition performances received international acclaim including the Critics’ choice\, Editor’s choice\, and “Best Classical Albums of 2021” from the Gramophone Magazine. \nLiu’s program will feature sonatas by Haydn\, Chopin\, and Prokofiev\, as well a variation set by Kapustin and an assortment of character pieces by Rameau. My lecture will look at sonata as a evolving\, yet “classical” genre\, and place both Kapustin and Rameau in the historical and musical contexts.

SUMMARY:Le Salon de Musiques: Concert Intro and postconcert Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The March concert of the Salon de Musiques concert series features two celebrated works by Edvard Grieg: the impassioned String Quartet in G Minor and the Concerto in A Minor (in a transcription for piano and string quartet). Also on the program: a beautiful piece\, Suite for Two Violins and Piano\, by Moritz Moszkowski (1854-1925)\, a composer who was made a fortune writing salon-friendly piano works\, but died almost penniless\, his works forgotten in the modernist mood of the twentieth century. \nThe artists: Sheng-Ching Hsu (violin)\, Chiai Tajima (violin)\, Alex Granger (viola)\, Evan Kahn (cello)\, and Sung Chang (piano). \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! SUMMARY:Mason Concert
DESCRIPTION:What’s better than ONE fabulous pianist? Why\, TWO fabulous pianists\, of course! Mason Home Concerts welcomes the exuberant Vieness Piano Duo—wife and husband\, Eva Schaumkell and Vijay Venkatesh—in a “beast” of a program\, featuring the Bach-Busoni Chaconne in D Minor\, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite\, some of Rachmaninoff’s Moments-Musicaux\, and (drum roll) Saint-Saëns The Carnival of the Animals. I am especially excited about this last selection\, because the Vieness Duo has asked me to do the narration. My preconcert introduction will explore the special idiom of “piano four hands\,” and also offer some insight into the individual works. \nThe Mason Concerts are a Westside gem: intimate\, well-planned\, and with great food and wine. Tickets often sell out quickly\, so buy soon!

DESCRIPTION:Vive la France! The February Salon spotlights two French composers of the later Romantic era: Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré. My preconcert introduction will explore the importance of chamber music for these composers and the activities of the Societé Nationale de Musique (the National Society of Music)\, an organization in which both Fauré and Saint-Saëns were active and which aimed to promote French music. \nI’ll also offer a snapshot of the life of Reynaldo Hahn\, who was born in Venezuela but lived most of his life in Paris. A composer\, singer\, conductor\, and music critic\, Hahn studied with Charles Gouonod and Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatoire\, and took private composition lessons with Saint-Saëns. \nProgram: Hahn\, Venezia for tenor voice and piano; Saint-Saëns\, Piano Quartet No. 2 in B-flat major\, Op. 41; Fauré\, Elegie in C Minor\, Op. 24 for cello and piano and Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor\, Op. 15. \nArtists: Benjamin Hoffman (violin)\, Jonah Sirota (viola)\, Sarah Kim (cello)\, Xiao Chen (piano)\, and Jon Lee Keenan (tenor)

SUMMARY:Le Salon de Musiques: Concert Intro and postconcert Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The music of Robert Schumann\, one of the most literary of canonic composers\, headlines this Salon program: the gorgeous song cycle “Dichterliebe” (Poet Love) and the dramatic Piano Quintet. Also featured is a Piano Quintet by little known composer Carl Frühling\, a generation younger than Brahms. \nArtists: Matthew Worth\, baritone; Kyle Gilner\, violin; Strauss Shi\, violin; Carson Rick\, viola; Juliette Herlin\, cello\, and—a special treat!—Salon Artistic Director and Founder\, François Chouchan at the piano. \nAs always\, the magic of this series is the combination of intimate musical performance\, interactive education\, and great food and drink! As musicological “co-host\,” I offer some introductory remarks on the program and moderate the post-concert Q&A with the artists\, champagne glass in hand!

SUMMARY:Le Salon de Musiques: Concert Intro and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic\, I’m returning to the marvelous Salon de Musiques chamber-concert series—now in La Jolla!—to introduce the program and moderate the post-concert Q&A. Organizer François Chouchan has crafted an enticing program\, one that (true to the Salon mission) combines canonic favorites with recovered treasures. On the more familiar side\, we have Handel’s Sonata for Two Violins in G Minor and Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D Minor (in an arrangement with string quartet instead of orchestra). The newcomer is the String Quintet in E Minor by George Onslow\, a man who loved chamber music and had the financial independence to support his passion. \nThe concert will feature a stellar group of musicians: violinists Ambrose Aubrun and Hwi-Eun Kim\, violist Jonah Sirota\, cellist Allan Hon\, bassist Aaron Blick\, and pianist Vijay Venkatesh.

SUMMARY:La Jolla Music Society / Finckel & Han
DESCRIPTION:Prelude Pre-Concert Lecture @ 7pm (Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano).\nConcert @ 8pm\nDavid Finckel and Wu Han are recipients of the 2010 Musical America’s Musicians of the Year award\, one of the highest honors granted by the music industry. \nHe was a protégé of Mstislav Rostropovich; she\, a veteran of top-flight musical training grounds like Aspen and Marlboro. Critics have praised the boldness\, imagination\, and collaborative intimacy of their work—often trumpeting his laser-like focus and her innate spark. \nBut performing is merely a starting point for this irrepressible husband and wife team\, whose résumé includes the stewardship of important arts organizations like the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music@Menlo; a history of innovation in programming\, recording\, and outreach; and a commitment to fostering young talent. Along the way\, they have built audiences and shaped a new wave of players. To call them overachievers would be an understatement. \nProgram\nTo be announced. \n  \n
