SUMMARY:Exploring Opera: Verdi's "Falstaff" (LA Opera virtual seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Verdi’s long journey to his final opera—his only successful comic work—is a lesson in perseverance and reinvention. He was 80 years old when Falstaff premiered at La Scala in Milan\, Italy—the same house where Verdi’s first work\, Oberto\, Count of Boniface\, premiered more than 50 years earlier. In between these landmark events of the composer’s professional life\, he lost a wife and two children to illness\, experienced scathing failure\, and buried himself in work until reaching such a level of popular success that he was able to subsidize a retirement home for professional musicians. \nMy presentation—“Verdi (finally) gets the last laugh: an introduction to Falstaff”—will trace this long arch of Verdi’s life\, leading to the creative partnership with librettist-composer Arrigo Boito\, with whom he wrote his last two operas. I will also consider why comedy proved—and continues to be—a major challenge for opera composers in the late 19th century to the present. \nThe “Exploring Opera” learning series also offers LAUSD teachers an opportunity for professional development and salary points.

DESCRIPTION:My kickoff lecture for this terrific FREE series of public lectures from LA Opera Connects will look into the musical idiom commonly labeled “minimalism” and more specifically Philip Glass’s Ahknaten\, the third opera in this “Portrait Trilogy”—operas about people that shifted the course of history. DESCRIPTION:My introductory lecture for this particular seminar sets up a day of exploration and critique critique Puccini’s Madama Butterfly—of one of the most popular\, and also thematically challenging\, works of the operatic canon. I will look at the historical background of the opera\, including contemporary events that may have affected the infamously bad reception of the premiere\, and also the colonialist/racially biased language and depictions of the opera’s sources and the libretto itself. DESCRIPTION:In this “Opera for Educators” seminar—offered by LA Opera Connects—I’ll be talking about the role of production in creating new meanings of older works such as La traviata\, Verdi’s most enduringly popular opera. LA Opera is presenting the work in a new production by director Shawna Lucey\, who takes an explicitly feminist approach\, grounding her interpretation in the historical realities of the French courtesan Marie Duplessis\, who inspired the character of Violetta. \nOther presenters will look explore the sources for La traviata‘s narrative\, the world of courtesans in mid-19th-century Paris\, and contemporary film adaptations such as Moulin Rouge and Pretty Woman.  \nLAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars are held via Zoom and provide an exciting opportunity for K-12 teachers to earn LAUSD salary points and UCLA extension credit. DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Opera presents a double feature of neglected one-act operas : Alexander Zemlinsky‘s Der Zwerg (The Dwarf\, 1922) and William Grant Still‘s Highway 1\, USA\, which was first completed in 1946\, but had to wait nearly two decades for its premiere.
