Upbeat Live: Dudamel Leads World Premiere of Ortiz’s “Glitter Revolution”/ California Festival (Nov 17)
November 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm PST
Led by Gustavo Dudamel, this concert is part of the statewide California Festival, a statewide music showcase spotlighting the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years.
The program spotlights works by two Latin composers, opening with Astor Piazzola’s tango-inflected The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, arranged orchestra and solo violin (Leticia Moreno). But the main event is a new ballet score by the composer Gabriela Ortiz, co-curator of the Pan-American Music Initiative with Dudamel and the Phil. Like many of Ortiz’s works, the ballet Revolución diamantina (“Glitter Revolution”) connects to critical real-world events, in this case the feminine protest movement that erupted in Mexico in 2019 following the rape of a girl by police officers.
An LA-Phil commission, Revolución diamantina receives its world premiere (concert version) with this 4-concert run. I will have the honor of speaking with Gabriela Ortiz about her first ballet score during the Upbeat Live preconcert conversation and lecture.
