Upbeat Live: Dudamel leads the LA Phil in “Das Rheingold”
January 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm PST
This special presentation of Wagner’s Das Rheingold celebrates architect Frank Gehry, a dedicated friend to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and, of course, designer of the gorgeous Walt Disney Concert Hall. Gehry has crafted the scenic design for this Rheingold production.
Before each of the three performances, I will be speaking with two members of the creative team: Alberto Arvelo (Director/Video Art Director) and Cori Ellison (Dramaturg). I’ll also offer some remarks on the musical style with audio examples to complement the opening discussion. A great way to ready the mind and spirit for this intense visual and musical experience.
From the LA Phil website: “For the first time, Dudamel helms a fully staged production of one part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, navigating the epic naturalism, endless melodies, and gripping harmonies. The mythical world of Das Rheingold springs forth from Walt Disney Concert Hall with the help of the ever-innovative Frank Gehry, direction by Alberto Arvelo, and costumes by Cindy Figueroa. The Grammy Award-winning Ryan Speedo Green lends his voice to Wotan, headlining an internationally renowned cast.”
And one of my favorite mezzo sopranos, Raehann Bryce-Davis, is appearing as Fricka!
