My final Prelude Lecture of LJMS season will introduced a sold-out concert! Pianist Bruce Liu, first prize winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition 2021 in Warsaw, makes his debut appearance at the La Jolla Music Society. His first album featuring the winning competition performances received international acclaim including the Critics’ choice, Editor’s choice, and “Best Classical Albums of 2021” from the Gramophone Magazine.

Liu’s program will feature sonatas by Haydn, Chopin, and Prokofiev, as well a variation set by Kapustin and an assortment of character pieces by Rameau. My lecture will look at sonata as a evolving, yet “classical” genre, and place both Kapustin and Rameau in the historical and musical contexts.
