I’m delighted to be an Invited Speaker at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego! And I’m revisiting one of my favorite topics: Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations.

When Bach published the “Goldberg” Variations in 1741, he could not have known that some two centuries later this famously demanding work for keyboard would ignite the musical world and claim a significant place in American popular culture of the latter twentieth century. This class will explore the fascinating structure and musical styles of the Goldbergs as well as its peculiar role in contemporary fiction and film.
