Le Salon de Musiques: Concert Intro and postconcert Q&A
May 21 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT
I am delighted to be acting as musicological cohost for this special Salon de Musiques concert celebrating Jewish composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. The program offers both the familiar and the relatively unknown: Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 2, Gustav Mahler’s Piano Quartet in A Minor, and Robert Kahn’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in A Minor (US Premiere). While the Nazi regime posthumously denigrated and banned music by Mendelssohn and Mahler, Kahn (1865–1951)—a Berlin composer whose works were performed by A-list talents such as Hans von Bülow and the Joachim Quartet—suffered directly from the venomous, anti-Semitic climate of the time.
