Part of the LAO’s “Opera for Educators” seminars, this particular event aims to educate—and inspire—K-12 teachers about ways to incorporate opera into their lesson plans. My presentation, “Fairy Tales, Opera, and the Art of Retelling,” will consider how fairy tales narratives were transformed in two canonic works: Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Rossini’s Cinderella. I will also explore the ways in which these stories might resonate with today’s young people, including critical issues such as food insecurity and parental abuse or neglect.
