This month I received an exciting commission from dramaturge Antonio Cuenca Ruiz at La Monnaie, the Royal Opera House in Brussels. He is working with Italian director Romeo Castellucci on next season’s production of The Magic Flute, in which they will address the imbalance of power and the gender bias of the original libretto and the opera’s long reception history. Mr. Ruiz and Mr. Castellucci were particularly interested in the reframing the character of the Queen of the Night and were enthusiastic about the chapter on the Queen in my book, Understanding the Women in Mozart’s Operas (University of California Press, 2007). They have commission an essay from me to be published in the program booklet for the production! I will upload to the English version of the essay to academia.edu later this summer.
