“What is it like teaching music history at an institution which does not have musicology students?” This was the question posed by the editors of “Musicology Now” (the official blog publication of the American Musicological Society) to a number of musicologist-educators. My essay opened the series and offered me a welcome opportunity to describe my unusual path as a teacher and scholar, one that has been challenging, but also creatively liberating.
