This crowd-pleasing program begins and ends with dance! First to take the stage: the world premiere of Donghoon Shin’s Dance Card (LA Phil commission), a thoughtful and playful musical reflection on the dual nature of the waltz—an experience that is both naively elegant and potentially dangerous. Pianist Yefim Bronfman will then partner with the orchestra for Liszt’s mighty Piano Concerto No. 2. Finally, favorite excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake—a “suite” selected by conductor Elim Chan herself—will bring the evening to a dramatic close with the ballet’s much-beloved themes and orchestral colors.

My Upbeat Live presentation will include a conversation with Donghoon Shin, whose inspirations for Dance Card extend back to childhood and the many creative “partners” that have influenced his own journey in composition.

Upbeat Live preconcert events are free to all ticket holders and begin 1 hour before the concert in BP Hall.
