Honoring the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s death, this lecture series for the Opera League of Los Angeles offers in-depth explorations of the historical and musical context for Puccini’s art works. This lecture considers the rise of Italian nationalism as well as the artistic challenges of Puccini’s Il trittico:  an innovative “triptych” of three one-act operas. We will look at the gritty realism of Il tabarro, the hyper Romantic nostalgia of Suor Angelica, and the satire of Gianni Schicchi.
